Being Bobby Brown
Singer Bobby Brown and wife Whitney Houston have divorced, but in June 2005, they were featured in a Bravo reality show titled "Being Bobby Brown." Bobby Brown's fame was not as great as it once was, but when then-wife Whitney Houston agreed to appear on the show, Bravo gave it the green light. The show was a hit, due in part to the fact that Whitey appeared on the show almost as much as Bobby did. The show popularized the saying "Hell to the no," uttered by Whitney frequently on the show.
Bobby Brown started his career with the popular boy band New Edition in 1980. His behavioral problems led to him being kicked out of the band, but, in 1986, he went solo and had a string of hits. By the time he married Whitney Houston in 1992, his singing career had already begun to falter. He was known mostly in the 1990s and 2000s for his legal problems, many of them resulting from drug and alcohol use. In 1993, he was arrested for overly suggestive stage performance. In 1995, he was arrested for a fight at Disney World and later that year charged with battery when he kicked a hotel security guard. In 1996, he had a wreck while drunk. In 1998, he was arrested for sexual battery. In 2000, he spent 26 days in jail for a drug related probation violation. In 2002, he was arrested for drug possession, speeding, and driving without a license. In 2003, he was arrested for allegedly striking Whitney and in 2004, he was arrested for parole violation from a drunk driving conviction. He was also jailed in 2004 for not paying child support to two of his children, but he eventually settled up the debt.
Apparently, Bravo thought all this turmoil and controversy would make for good television and they were right. The series focused on the personal lives of the two singers including their relationship with daughter Bobbi Kristina, Bobby's children from previous relationships (La Princia and Bobby Jr.), and his brother Tommy.
The first episode started with Bobby being released from prison after a 30-day stay and seeing Whitney for the first time. The second episode found Bobby back in court on charges he assaulted Whitney the previous year. Whitney was there to support him and the judge eventually let him go on bail. The third episode featured the couple in London on a shopping trip to Harrod's, where they met owner Mohamed Al-Fayed. The episode ended with the volatile couple fighting. The fourth episode showed Bobby camping with his son, nephews, father, brother, and male friends. Whitney and the girls show up, but left again before the day is through. Bobby takes Whitney to the Chateau Elan spa in Atlanta for Mother's Day in the fifth episode. In the sixth episode, the family stays in the Hyatt in Atlanta after their house floods. The seventh episode finds the couple disagreeing again as Bobby must leave to go to LA for press appearances. All the kids get together for the tenth episode, but Bobbi Kristina and LaPrincia end up fighting. The eleventh episode was a clip show and the final episode was the Browns celebrating Christmas.
Brown and Houston divorced in April 2007.
