AI: American Classics
This week’s show featured Tony Bennett and the Idols singing American classics. I was a bit disappointed with Blake’s version of “Mack the Knife.” It started out so softly. He’s definitely no Bobby Darin! Phil just scared me this week with his version of “Night and Day.” I have to agree with Simon – it was dark and gloomy. I am sure Sinatra is spinning in his grave! Melinda did a good job with “I Got Rhythm,” but when Simon tried to criticize her just a bit, the crowd reacted very strongly.
I thought the best performance of the night was Chris R. – well, I guess he is just Chris now since Chris S. is gone. His version of “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” was great. It paid a nice homage to the old version, yet was young and hip. I think Jordin is cute and is a good singer, but for some reason, she just doesn’t do a thing for me. I am even impressed with how she handles herself to only be 17, but I just can’t feel any love for her. She did a good job with “On a Clear Day” but Simon said she failed to do what Chris did – make it current. Gina did “Smile” (who knew Chaplin wrote that?). Randy and Paula raved, but Simon said he couldn’t rave about the vocals – ouch.
Sanjaya – well, one thing is he didn’t embarrass himself this week. The hair was slicked back and I was actually able to concentrate on his singing. I didn’t think it was bad, but the judges had nothing good to say. Well, except for Simon who tried a new approach and said “incredible.” Actually, based on his past performances, last night WAS incredible. Haley got it worse than Sanjaya. She was told she had a good style by Randy, that she looked good in green by Paula, and that she had nice legs by Simon. Oh, that is bad when they don’t even comment on your singing. Lakisha finished up the night well with a big vocal version of “Stormy Weather.” Simon thought it was a sassy, great performance.
Who’s going home this week? I think the bottom two will be Phil (again) and Haley with Haley finally making her exit. Legs can only carry you so far.
