Amazing Race: Maria and Tiffany Give Up the Race

This has been a weird “Amazing Race” season for me. Last week, Mika was paralyzed by her fear of the water and height at the resort, so she and Canaan had to give up. This week, it was the poker girls that gave up.

The teams left Dubai for Amsterdam. Because the first flight was at midnight and everyone was on that one, Meghan and Cheyne lost their huge lead. While everyone waited, Sam and Dan came out to them. I thought it was hilarious when Gary asked if this was the time for him to tell Matt he was adopted!

Brian couldn’t drive the car once they reached Amsterdam and they fell behind, a place they would stay for the rest of the episode. The teams were headed to Martinitoren in Groningen. Once there, one team member had to climb the bell tower to count all the bells correctly to get the next clue. Everyone got the number right the first time except Ericka. She also got the wrong number the second and third time as well. It was only on the fourth try that she finally got the correct number (62). I think she told Brian later that she spent two hours doing that Roadblock – they were WAY behind. Of course, Tiffany and Maria lucked out as one of the boys gave them the number on the way down.

Up next was a Detour – Farmer’s Game (play the Dutch version of golf) or Farmer’s Dance (learn a traditional dance). The trick to the game was they had to swim to the course, and then complete each of the three holes in eight strokes or less. The trick to the dance was they had to swing a mallet and ring a carnival bell and then eat a salted herring after learning the dance. Either way, they had to dress in traditional Dutch costumes, which proved funny to see Gary and Flight Time in the girl’s outfits.

Most chose the golf, but Maria and Tiffany chose the dance. They swung the mallet and didn’t even come close to ringing the bell. They gave up and went to do the golf. They sucked at that as well. They went back to the dance and swung the mallet again – at least 70 times, to no avail. So, they switched back to golf. They had been swimming twice, it was getting cold, and their arms were tired from swinging the mallet and golf clubs, so eventually Phil met them there as they gave up.

Sam and Dan easily made it to the Zoutkamp Harbor pit stop in first. They were followed by Meghan and Cheyne, then Flight Time and Big Easy. Gary and Matt were happy to show up in fourth place. Brian and Ericka walked all the way to the dance hall and didn’t realize that they were supposed to ride bikes until they learned the dance. Phil informed them when they arrived in fifth place that because they didn’t follow the clue, they incurred a 30 minute penalty. Meanwhile, Maria and Tiffany were still swinging away, so Brian and Ericka easily waited out the 30 minutes and came in fifth place.

I was glad to see Flight Time and Big Easy manage their way out of the bottom. It is down to five teams now and although I really thought the girls were a strong team, the race proved to be too much for them.
