America’s Got Talent: 12 More Perform

The “America’s Got Talent” quarterfinals continue. The Footwork Kingz put on a great show, but the guy at the end fell off the other’s shoulders. I think he fell in practice and hurt himself, so you have to cut him some slack and the judges did. David said they were “Hoff the charts.” He also said the U4FIA Dance Crew was “Hoff nuts.” Last week, he said someone was Hofftastic – is this the start of a horrible Hoff trend? Can Hofful be far behind?

Piers didn’t X the first three acts, but that didn’t stop him from Xing others. He didn’t like G-Force (said the vocals were way off), Dave Johnson (in all fairness, poor Dave was Xed by all three judges), and magician Jay Mattioli (saying he had seen it all a million times before). Everyone liked Marcus Terrell and his new Serenades, saying the new backup singers were fabulous. Jeffrey Ou was probably good, but none of us will ever know – one of the dancers kicked a mic cable and we only got to hear the first part of the song. This isn’t live (is it?), couldn’t they have taped it again with the sound or is that too much to ask?

Dave Johnson got the worst reviews. This poor guy wrote a funny song that he was praised for (the ode to David), however, it was the first song he had written. He wrote a mildly humorous song about the Golden Girls, but the judges weren’t amused at all. All three Xed him and all but said he was lucky to have gotten this far. Another example of the cruelness of this show – give someone hope and then knock them down.

Pixie Mystere reminded me of a little miniature Ziegfeld Follies show, but Hoff used the standard line “You are what this show is all about.” Sharon and Piers both Xed Jay Mattioli saying his magic was too old fashioned. At least Hoff said he liked his attitude and presentation.

Hairo Torres received mixed reviews. Sharon wasn’t sure he could do a Vegas show on his own, while Piers and David both found him weird, but wonderful. Piers said Bri excited him with her singing although Hoff thought the dancers were a bit scary. Mario and Jenny were, as Piers said, as near to a pure Vegas act as they have seen, but the music was a bit scary. I kept waiting for a human sacrifice to occur. Lawrence Beamen has a great voice, but tonight’s song was a bit soft for me. I kept waiting for a big finish but there wasn’t one.

Who’s safe? I would bet money that Mario and Jenny and Lawrence Beamen were. The rest is tough. Pixie Mystere were good (and a bit different from other acts), but so was Marcus Terrell and Bri. Hairo Torres is quirky, so America might want to see more of him. Footwork Kingz definitely stepped it up (pardon the pun) from their audition. And what of Jeffrey Ou? If the judges felt they couldn’t judge him, will America vote for him? Personally, I think he got a bum deal – how do you judge a piano guy with no sound?
