America’s Got Talent: The Houston Auditions

Not sure how many audition nights “America’s Got Talent” is going to have, but tonight was another one. It started out with the Texas Tenors, who will be going to Vegas, before it hit a losing streak. Bruce Thomas and his harmonious hands were a no-go as was the Urban Burlesque Troupe (they had chair problems), In Sterio (flutists), and the Crispy Family Carnival, which was mainly the girls stapling dollar bills to a big guy. Ouch!

However, talent came back into the arena when Acrodunk showed up. Sure, we’ve seen acrobatic basketball people before, but these guys were really good and besides, I liked their attitude. When Piers asked them if they thought they were worth a million, one of the guys said they were worth more than that, but if that was all the show as offering, they would take it. Live in Color got a few televised minutes before we were told they were moving on to Vegas. We saw a small clip of belly dancer Anna Pipoyan, who had an added bit of danger by wearing a lit candelabra on her head. Eclipse was a good rapper (he’s going to Vegas), but I am not so sure about 8 year old Eleisha Miller. She was cute, but Sharon said the singing wasn’t good enough. Apparently, cute and funny goes a way with Piers and David, they both said yes, but I doubt we will see any more from her. Sorry mom and dad if you are reading this, but she has a vocal coach (which she told Piers), so there is hope for improvement.

Lamar and Jamar, aka Timez 2, were twin rappers who were good, but like Piers, I didn’t want to like them. I dislike acts who come out and try to pump up the audience like this is a concert or something. This time, Piers was the no vote, but David and Sharon said yes. Grandma Lee was funny, especially when she said Piers was cute and “I’d do him.” I loved it when Nick said “Grandma Lee kinda dirty.” This feisty old bird will be going to Vegas.

The final act was, of course, inspirational. Barbara Padilla was a cancer survivor who opened her mouth and gave everyone a Susan Boyle surprise (I am trying that out as an adjective, did it work?). She was a very, very, very good opera singer (at least as far as I could tell – not really into opera), but what was with everyone in the arena being on their feet except Piers? He said she got a massive, 100% yes from him, but he wouldn’t stand?

And, this is my problem. She was incredible, but an opera singer (Neal E. Boyd) won last year. What are the chances of two opera singers winning back to back? No matter how incredible she is, this is not America’s Got Opera. I dunno, I am just kinda torn by this.
