America, Here Are Your Final Twelve Idols

The final 12 American Idol contestants were announced tonight along with a special AI project, which will take place in April.  But before that, the final 16 sang the Stealers Wheel classic “Stuck in the Middle with You.”  That might have been okay if I hadn’t seen the movie Reservoir Dogs about 1,000 times.  I kept picturing Mr. Blonde cutting off Ryan’s ear the whole time they were singing.

Anyhow, Ryan called the contestants on stage either one at a time or two at a time.  Lakisha and Blake were lucky – they were called first and found out they had both made it.  Chris S. was told he made it, as was Jordin.  After almost giving Phil a heartattack, Ryan told him that he too was safe.  Poor Jared was the first to learn he was going home.  He said he was shocked, but frankly, I wasn’t.  Melinda, Brandon, Gina, and Chris R. were also told they were going through to the next round.

That left three places open with six contestants still on stage.  Antonella was called up by Ryan and told she was leaving.  She too seemed shocked – I guess she thought the pictures might keep her in because it sure would not have been for her singing.  Stephanie was told she was staying, then Ryan called Haley and Sabrina to the center stage.  I felt SURE Haley was out of there, but Ryan told her she was staying and Sabrina was going home.  I thought that was an outrage – Sabrina was much better and much more memorable than – uh, what was her name?  Anyhow, that left Sundance and Sanjaya.

Then Ryan talked about the project.  It is to be called Idol Gives Back.  They are going to help the improvised in Africa and the United States.  Ryan and Simon took a trip to Africa to meet children there and Randy and Paula will visit the hurricane ravaged states of Louisiana and Mississippi.  On April 24 and 25, for each viewer vote, sponsors will donate money to the poor.  Viewers can also donate.  I don’t mind donating to the poor, but I am thinking Simon probably has more money than God – can he get off of some of his to help people?  I just hate with the RICH and famous ask US for money.

Anyhow, Sundanace and Sanjaya…Sundance stood there with a confident smirk on his face while Sanjaya once again looked like he was going to pass out.  Ryan made the announcement and it was…Sundance who was headed home.  Paula said she was speechless, but apparently she forgot how Sundance sucked in Hollywood and a few times on the stage.  Yes, he is probably a better singer than Sanjaya, but he honestly didn’t do anything for me.  I hope Sanjaya can get some coaching and really step up his game.

Next week, the original Diva – Miss Diana Ross.
