American Idol: Country Night

Maybe it was just me, but I thought tonight’s AI was boring.  Maybe it was because it was country music, but the only person who impressed me tonight was…oddly enough…Phil! It was like after so many weeks, Phil finally came alive. I even voted for him, for the first time ever!  I had never heard “Where the Blacktop Ends,” but as far as I could tell, he did a great job.  He won rave reviews from all three judges.

Jordin did a “fantastic” job on “Broken Wing” according to Paula and Simon even told her this was the first time he actually believed she could win AI.  Sanjaya came out with what appeared to be a pseudo-afro under a bandana and sang Bonnie Raitt’s “Let’s Give’em Something to Talk About.”  I thought he did okay (for him), but Randy said it was karaoke and Simon said it was “utterly horrendous.”  Lakisha sang “Jesus Take the Wheel” – no, SHOUTED “Jesus Take the Wheel” and the judges were hard on her.  Even Paula had nothing nice to say about it.  Chris bored me with “Mayberry” – to me, he is up one week, then down the next.  Randy said he felt no sense of connection and Simon said it was nasally (which Chris defended as a form of singing) and nondescript.

Melinda shined last night with “Trouble is a Woman.”  I had never heard that song, but her version made me want to go out on iTunes and look it up.  Simon just seems to be tired of her “Ah shucks, I can sing?” attitude (which I think is genuine).  Blake finished up the night with “When the Stars Go Blue.”  Randy said it was the right song and Paula said he was the whole package, but Simon said it was just “okay.”

Who’s in trouble this week?  Hard to say.  If I had to pick, I’d go with Sanjaya and Chris, but Sanjaya seems to have such a fan base, he is almost invincible.  But, maybe his time is really up.  If Phil is in the bottom two, it will truly be an injustice this week.
