American Idol: Hollywood Week

Well, as usual, there were those that were ecstatic and those that were heartbroken this week. Among those heartbroken, (because they were sent home) that you might remember were single parents Angela, Perry, and Suzanne. Also sent home were Ghaleb (with the thick accent), Amy (the abstinence girl), Kayla (who had the near fatal car crash), and the Lampkin brother and sister duo.

It was hard for me to tell exactly who is still around, but it looks like my favorite of the night, Brook White is still there. She is the girl that had never seen an R-rated movie. She looked so relaxed at the keyboard and her voice was so good, my first thought was “She sounds like Carole King!” Then, Simon said she had a “Carly Simon, or rather Carole King thing going on.” That Simon, always trying to steal my thunder!

Also still there as far as I know is David Hernandez, Kyle Ensley (the dorky looking presidential candidate kid, who actually did bad the first day – Simon even left, but made a great comeback in his final attempt), Davie Archuleta (Randy was very impressed), Syesha (who almost blew it because she had a sore throat and lost her voice – how she was able to sing when she couldn’t talk, I’ll never know!), Australian Michael Johns (who Simon called the “Best of the day!”), Amanda (the rocker nurse, who was in a bad accident right before Hollywood), and Irish girl Carly Smithson.

There were a few interesting incidents last night. Josiah, the homeless kid living in his car, came out really impressing the judges. He looked at home on the stage, but by the final day, his eighteen-year-oldness was showing. He was sleep deprived and didn’t like the band. So what does he do? He gets up on stage, tells them they are great, but asks them to leave. A ballsy move, but not a good one in this case. Simon said it was the worst of all his auditions and even Paula said it didn’t work. He tried to say it took a “helluva lot of guts” to dismiss the band, but Simon said he was just being over confident now and borderline annoying. However, based on his previous auditions, they allowed him to stay.

Beauty queen Brooke got a “yes” from Simon (he IS getting soft in his old age) and a “no” from Randy, so it came down to Paula. After much begging on Brooke’s party, Paula finally dealt the deathblow, telling her “no.” Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Paula crush someone’s dreams like that.

All I can say is that Simon promised this season would be much, much better than last and so far, from the auditions, it looks like the show is going to live up to that!
