American Idol: Motown Classics

It was Motown Classics week on “American Idol” with none other than Smokey Robinson as the mentor. Most of the group did well tonight, but there were a few sour notes.

Matt started out the night and he was so good, Randy said he thought he was a challenger for the top spot. Kara thought Kris put his mark on his song while Simon said he needed to believe in himself more. Poor Scott – I love him, but I have to agree with Simon and Randy that his performance tonight was sort of hotelish, although Paula thought he brought something different. At least Simon said he was better than that song. Paula gave Simon some coloring books and crayons, but he got the last laugh when he drew a mustache on her at the end of the night.

Megan continued to remind me that it should be Alexis singing in this spot and not her. Randy used all sorts of adjectives such as “bizarre” and “crazy” and called it a train wreck. Paula was nicer in only saying it was the wrong song choice. Anoop did well this week and reminded me why I originally liked him. Simon called it a great vocal, but said he looked like he was asleep. Michael was told by Paula of all people that it was a tough performance and it reminded her of an old Las Vegas lounge act. Simon said with vocals like that, Michael had no way of winning.

Tonight was Lil’s night, but she blew it with song choice. Instead of taking on Diana Ross as I had hoped, she took on Martha Reeves with “Heat Wave.” It was okay, but like Kara said, everyone was waiting to see what she was going to do this week. Okay was not going to get it. Adam – was it just me or did he look like the love child of Elvis and Kurt Russell? And, I don’t mean that in a bad way. The judges raved about his performance with Smokey Robinson giving him a standing ovation.

Danny did pretty well, but they seemed to rush through his review rather quickly, with Simon calling it “clumsy and amateurish.” Randy said it wasn’t his best, but he loved his energy and Kara agreed.

My pick for best of the night was Allison. That child has lungs on her the size of 18 wheelers! I missed last week when she was in the bottom three, but surely America must have been crazy to put her there! She stole the stage from everyone else as far as I am concerned. That last note gave me chills – both times that I watched it! She too got a standing ovation from Smokey Robinson. Like Kara said, she sang like she’s been doing it for 400 years.

I love Scott, Kris is a cutie pie, Anoop is improving, Lil is great, everyone loves Danny, but can we please just fast forward to a finale between Allison and Adam?

Who is in danger this week? I think it is Michael and Megan, but both seem to have that Sanjaya factor going on with fans. That means that Scott could be in danger – not sure how big his fan base is, but I voted for him (and Allison too).

it’s interesting how the different contestants are emerging as either obviously terrible or obviously great
