American Idol: Rat Pack Night

Okay, not really sure what Jamie Foxx has to do with the Rat Pack, but he was the mentor on “American Idol” tonight. I know he is a successful recording artist, but I would have rather seen Michael Buble mentoring the group this week.

Kris was up first and might I just say he looked awfully cute in his Rat Pack era suit. Kris sang “The Way You Look Tonight.” Randy said it was his best performance to date. Kara said he set the bar for the night. Simon thought it was good, but a bit wet – whatever that means. He tried to compare it to walking a spaniel – still lost Simon.

Next up after the ramblings by Simon (he should really leave ramblings to Paula), Allison was up. She just turned 17 – hard to believe when I hear her sing. She sang “Someone to Watch Over Me.” After several “Yos,” Randy finally got out that it was the bomb and he loved it. Paula said that it was alluring and tender. Simon asked her if she thought she could win. When she said yes, they all had that chance, he said that he didn’t think she thought she could win and he thought she would be in trouble tonight.

Matt sang “My Funny Valentine.” Randy said it was a hard song to sing, but it was a bit pitchy. Kara appreciated the runs, but didn’t think he was emotionally connected. Simon disagreed with Randy. He thought it was the only believable authentic song he had heard tonight and it was absolutely brilliant.

Danny sang “Come Rain or Come Shine.” He said he wasn’t going to change it up much, which I was glad to hear – it is a great song and really doesn’t need much. Randy was afraid it would be safe, but said that Danny was the only one so far that could have an album of songs like that. Kara liked the Rat Pack swagger. Simon agreed he had a confidence tonight and proved a point.

Last, but not least was Adam. He sang “Feeling Good.” I liked it, but it was a little flashy to be too Rat Pack it seemed. Randy called it a little too theatrical and a little too Broadway, but in the zone. Kara was shocked – in a good way. Paula said it was like watching the Olympics and Adam is Michael Phelps. Simon said Randy’s complaint was like “complaining that a cow moos.” Simon liked his showmanship.

Who’s in trouble this week? Well, I would say Matt (despite Simon’s praises) and Allison just because someone has to be in danger and I don’t think it will be Kris, Danny, or Adam.
