American Idol: Rock Night with Slash

It was Rock Night on “American Idol” but there wasn’t a whole lotta rockin going on in my opinion. These was also a new twist to the night – duets! Could have done without that, but they had to find some way to stretch the show out.

First up was Adam with “Whole Lotta Love.” Randy called him a rock star, but Kara corrected him, saying Adam was a rock god. Then, she said he should do an album of glam rock of the ‘80s. Was glam rock in the ‘80s? I thought glam rock was like Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls of the ‘70s. Glam metal was in the ‘80s – another Kara goof. Simon said it was one of his favorite performances by Adam.

Next up was Allison with “Cry Baby.” Rock? Well, yes, but no. Simon said that she had grown a lot in the competition, but that there was no originality in tonight’s song and I have to agree. Normally, I love Allison but this was just okay. Randy didn’t love the song choice, which led to a bit of confusion. Allison said she thought about doing “Somebody to Love” and I knew she meant by Jefferson Airplane, but Simon thought she meant the Queen song. Still would have been better than “Cry Baby.”

Kris and Danny sang “Renegade” as their duet and did okay. Just okay. Randy thought they complimented each other, but Kara called it pitchy and Simon said Danny was better than Kris.

After that beating, Kris was up with “Come Together.” Was it just me or did he mess up the line “One thing I can tell you is you got to be free?” That wasn’t how I heard him sing it, but I looked up the lyrics and that is how it should have been. Hate to pick on Kris – I’d like to see him in the final 3, but Kara didn’t think it was a great performance and Simon didn’t like it, equating it to eating ice for lunch.

Danny sang “Dream On.” I would have enjoyed this much more from Adam, but then he is the rocker of the group and would have added the theatrics it screamed for. Randy gave him an A+ for effort, while Paula upped him with “An A++.” Simon said the last note was like watching a horror movie.

Allison redeemed herself as she and Adam did a duet of “Slow Ride.” Finally, some more rock! Simon said they won the duet battle and Randy called it “da bomb.”

Who’s in trouble? Honestly, I’ve never felt any love for Danny and I’d like to see him go, but I think he is safe. That brings us to Kris and Allison. Notice I am not even considering Adam leave after tonight’s performance (and last week’s bottom three scare). Both performances were okay, but Allison did do a rockin job on “Slow Ride.” I would honestly hate to see Kris or Allison go, but I think it might be one of them.
