American Idol: San Francisco Auditions

There was some amazing talent tonight on American Idol, but I don’t think we got to see a lot of it. The ones that were put though mostly seemed iffy. Tatiana Del Toro had done quite a lot in her 23 years – singer, actress, songwriter, assistant director, model, etc. Her psychic friend told her we would see her in the Top 12, but I think we may see her once in Hollywood. Her singing was over the top and it seems like Randy, Paula, and Kara just put her through because of her personality. I gotta agree with Simon on this one.

Jesus Valenzula was good, but it took brining his two young boys in before the judges said yes to Hollywood. Adam Lambert was good, but Simon thought he was too theatrical. The others put him through anyhow. And the final contestant, Kai Kalama, was just a sweetie! He has no personal life because he takes care of his mother, who has a seizure disorder, during the day. I was thinking “Oh, please let him be able to sing!” and he could! But, Simon thought he had no stage presence. Kara told him to work on that and he was put through. John Twiford, Allison Iraheta, and Raquel Murdoch also made it to Hollywood, but we saw very little of their auditions.

Those not making it were Annie Murdoch (apparently, all the waiting didn’t help her decide which song to sing), Nick Reed (the only thing scarier than bright red hair was his singing), Dean-Anthony Bradford (who seemed unnaturally preoccupied with his coat), and Dalton Powell (he was so nervous – thankfully the judges, even Simon, were kind).

Then there was Akila Askew-Gholston. This woman was crazy. She brought medical information, thinking that could help her singing. She insisted on mispronouncing many parts of the throat. She sang an original song (which, as Simon said, was terrible). She explained that the problem was it “came from the wrong rectum” or at least I thought that was what she said. I almost fell out of the chair laughing when she said “Paula had a very hit in the ‘80s when I was a child.” Finally, Kara had to walk her to the door. If the judges hadn’t “irracitated” her, she might have had a chance.
