American Idol: Second Group of 12 Perform

Still not sure I like what “American Idol” is doing this year with the groups of 12, but here’s the next set. I just hate that so many people are getting cut each week – it’s hard to watch.

Jasmine Murray
Like several contestants from last week, Jasmine started out softly, like she was frightened (understandably so). Randy didn’t think it was the right song and Kara agreed it was pitchy. Even Paula agreed. Simon said she had a great a look, attitude and confidence, but not a great voice. But, he did say he thought she was a few years away.

Matt Giraud
Kara wasn’t blown away – wrong type of song. Paula said it was a risk he took and that his performance here was better than the rehearsal. Simon said it verged on horrible. Ouch. Okay, Simon, it wasn’t that bad. Randy said he was still pulling for him and Kara said he was one of her favorites too.

Jeanine Vailes
Oh no, another soft/scared singer. You know when the judges only talk about your legs, it is bad. Simon said great legs, but terrible. Randy said the best part was the end when it was over. Kara called her pretty with nice lips.

Nick Mitchell
What can I say? I love Norman Gentle. Simon said he prayed Norman didn’t go through to the next round then called the performance atrocious – horrific comedy. Norman told him “it takes one to know one sassy pants.” Did I mention that I loved Norman Gentle? Randy called it “one of the most entertaining performances ever.” I love when Kara said he wore the same shirt every week, “like Simon.” Paula called him a true performer and memorable.

Allison Iraheta
Hey, someone that can sing (at least tonight). Randy said she blew it out of the “da box.” Kara called her serious, but in a good way. Simon said she was the best tonight by a mile, but considering the other contestants (Nick aside, of course), that really wasn’t that much of a compliment.

Kris Allen
Kara said the back half of the song was better than the first half, but it was the completely wrong song. Paula disagreed completely, saying he nailed the song. Simon agreed with Paula – wow. She gave him a kiss for that.

Megan Joy Corkrey
Paula said she picked the right song and the camera loved her. Simon called her a “funny little thing,” and said that she oversang the second part of the song. But, he said he hoped America voted for her. Randy loved the tone of her voice.

Matt Breitzke
Matt came to sing tonight too! At least I thought so. Simon said he hated the song. This is why I am not a judge on “American Idol.” Randy called the performance okay, but boring. Kara said it didn’t show any side of him. I thought it was pretty good.

Jesse Langseth
Randy thought it was okay, but didn’t blow them out of the box – not exciting. Kara thought she was sexy, but pitchy at times. Paula found her captivating. Simon said he thought she was forgettable even though she has a nice voice.

Kai Kalama
When he first started this song, I pictured Kathy Bates in “Fried Green Tomatoes.” But, he was good – I like his voice. Kara said he has some pitch issues, but gave it his all. Paula thought he had what it took to make it in the business, but Simon called it old fashioned and corny, which of course, drew boos from the crowd. Randy agreed, saying it was too safe.

Mishavonna Henson
I like her voice and Paula did too, but said the song didn’t excite her. Story of the whole season so far, huh? Simon called her very serious and cold. Randy said Simon was right – the song was too old for her. Kara wanted her to loosen up.

Adam Lambert
Could Adam Lambert save the night? I think so (thank God he sped up the song – I was thinking “A slow version of Can’t Get No Satisfaction?”). I did agree with Simon, parts were brilliant and parts, like the beginning were excruciating. Paula loved it and Randy said he was “da bomb.”

Who’s going through? I think for the girls, it will be Allison Iraheta and for the guys, I think Adam Lambert might have pulled it off. Who will be in third? Hard to say, but I think Norman Gentle might have a big enough fan base to pull it off. We will know for sure tomorrow night!
