American Idol: The Final 8 Perform
Tonight’s theme for AI was inspirational songs. Michael started out the night with “Dream On.” I loved it, but Randy said it was just “awight.” Simon said it was a very good performance, but he preferred when Michael made bluesy/R&B song choices better. Syesha took on “Believe” by Fantasia. Randy said he felt no special connection while Simon agreed, saying it lacked a big wave of emotion.
Jason sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” but he did the Bruddah Iz version. I had never heard of it. He played a ukulele and as strange as that sounds, it was good. Randy said it was blazing molten hot and even Simon called it “fantastic.” Maybe there is more to Jason than the hair and a smile. Kristy Lee seems to be moving her way out of bottom dweller status. The girl actually looked like a star tonight, albeit a country star, but a star nonetheless! She sang “Anyway” and although Randy said it had pitch moments, Paula said she outdid herself and Simon said “very, very good indeed” and he said she looked like a star.
David C. sang “Innocent” but as Simon said, his performance was not as good as previous weeks. Paula said he was the whole package, but even Randy admitted to being a bit disappointed. Carly, still not looking like a star to me, sang “Show Must Go On.” As Randy would say, it was “awight.” Paula and Randy agreed they felt disconnected. Simon said she lost control of the song and warned she might be in trouble this week. He did say she looked nice - I couldn’t tell a difference.
David A. really impressed me tonight with “Angels.” I wanna not like him because he is 17 and I am worn out after Jordin winning last year, but this kid is good! Randy called it his hottest moment of the season and Simon said while it was not the best vocals, it was the best song choice, and David would breeze through to the next round. Brooke finished off the night with the Carol King version of “You Got a Friend.” It fell kinda flat for me and I love Brooke. Paula said it was a perfect way to end the evening and Simon called it a “pleasant walk in the park.” Is that good or bad?
I think this week, it should be down to the final two – or is that even cancelled because tomorrow night is the Idol Gives Back show? Anyhow, I am afraid Carly is in trouble and maybe even Syesha (again).
