American Idol: The Final Seven Perform

Tonight the mentor was Mariah Carey. I thought I liked some Mariah Carey songs, but unfortunately, it was none of the ones the Idols picked tonight. And. one song wasn’t even originally a Mariah Carey song. Most of the audience and Idols probably don’t know, but “Without You” was originally done by Badfinger in 1970 and became a hit for Harry Nilsson in 1971. I like his version best.

Anyhow, first up was David A. with “When You Believe.” Randy said he was worried he would pick that one, but it was “da bomb.” Paula said he made Mariah proud with that version. Simon said he knew David would pick that song and it was a very, very good performance. Next up was Carly. She looked a bit more like a star tonight, but please – enough with the black! Don’t they have stylists to help the Idols? Carly sang “Without You.” Randy said she challenged herself, but had to trust her lower range. Paula said she showed restraint. Simon said he wanted to hear her sing this song, but she was over thinking everything and didn’t quite pull it off. Syesha sang “Vanishing.” Simon thought it was technically very good, but risky to sing a song not many people know. Paula thought it was smart and Randy said she had a few pitchy moments, but overall did a good job.

Brooke sang “Hero,” which caused Randy to say he liked the singer/songwriter vibe. Simon, in one of the funniest moments of the night, compared it to ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. That lead to much conversation about how the beef was there, but no condiments, etc. Kristy Lee countrified “Forever.” I thought she did okay, Randy said she had a couple of pitchy moments. She blew Paula away (is that really hard to do?), but Simon said it was a bit whiney and didn’t give him the chills. She still looked more like star quality than some of the remaining Idols. I think she is ready to go on tour with Bucky!

David C. sang “Always Be My Baby.” I am sorry; I guess it is just me, but every song he sings sounds alike, from the Beatles to Mariah. Anyhow, the judges raved, with Simon saying it was like coming out of karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air. Ah.

Jason ended the night with “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” Randy said it was like being at a weird luau with someone playing music off in the distance. Paula said she wanted to be at the luau and oddly enough, Simon agreed.

Who’s is trouble…well, common sense tells me to put Kristy Lee in the bottom and I think Carly may find herself there again.
