American Idol: The Final Six Perform
Tonight’s mentor was Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber (although Paula obviously confused him with Elton and called him “Sir”). Randy and Simon said it would be one of the toughest weeks yet, but I thought most of the remaining Idols did well.
Syesha finally showed some personality with “One Rock ‘n’ Roll Too Many.” Randy and Paula both felt she as in her element and even Simon agreed that she was good. Jason sang “Memory,” which kinda freaked out Lord Webber as the song is normally sung by an older female. It cracked Randy up to see Jason sing it with dreads, but called the vocals a train wreck. Simon agreed, saying it must have felt like the longest two minutes of Jason’s life. Brooke started, then stopped and started “You Must Love Me” again, something Paula said you could never do. But, Simon said it was what he would have done. She forgot the lyrics and I think it messed up the rest of her performance (understandably!).
That damn little David Archuleta – I don’t want to like him – I honestly don’t. But, he keeps coming out and blowing me away each week! This week, he chose “Think of Me” and Randy said he was “the one to beat.” Although Simon said it was forgettable, I have to agree…as much as I hate to…with Paula, it was like a good pop ballad. Carly wanted to sing “All I Ask of You” but Lord Webber said she had a big voice and should sing “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Randy said it was good, but not her best performance. Of course, Paula gave her a standing O. Simon said it was one of his favorite performances of the night. I didn’t care so much for it. She looked better – thankfully, she finally had a bit of color tonight in her hippie dress, but the song just didn’t do anything for me. It was funny when she brought out the t-shirt that said “Simon Loves Me (this week).” Ah, Simon’s love is so fleeting.
Finishing up the night was David Cook with “Music of the Night.” Randy thought it was molten hot lava. Simon said he made the most of the song, but he didn’t like that side of him. I thought it was “just awight.”
