American Idol: The Final Three Perform

Each of the three remaining idols were to sing three songs:  one of the judge’s choosing, one of the producer’s choosing, and one they chose themselves.  Simon chose “Wishing on a Star” for Jordin.  Randy thought it was very hot, but Simon didn’t like his own song choice.  He said he didn’t care for the jazzy arrangement and it was not one of Jordin’s best performances.  He said her second song, “She Works Hard for Her Money” was good, but still wasn’t happy with the arrangement.  Randy and Paula both thought it was nice.  Her final performance was “I Who Have Nothing.”  Randy thought it was her best of the night, Paula thought it was great, and Simon said she sang it well, but he hated to see a 17-year-old sing a 60-year-old song.

Blake, though out performed by both girls, did well on all three of his songs.  He opened with “Roxanne” – Paula’s pick.  He did well, but like Simon said, whoever sings that has to imitate Sting’s version.  His second song, “This Love” was the producers choice and Randy thought that was really the type of music he should be singing.  Even Simon said he sounded comfortable with that song.  His last song was a Robin Thicke song he chose.  Randy thought it was “awright,” but Simon said he liked that Blake still was taking risks.

Melinda proved tonight, to me at least, why she is going to win American Idol this year.  She is versatile and has a maturity that Jordin (understandably) lacks.  She opened with a big request from Randy – a Whitney song.  But, he said she stepped up to the challenge and blew it out of the box.  The producers chose a Tina Turner song for her “Nut Bush City Limits.”  Simon said he loved that side of her and called the performance brilliant.  She chose to sing “I’m a Woman” for her final song.  As Randy said, it showed range and Simon even said she proved, by being consistent week after week, that she deserved a place in the finals.

I think this is Blake’s week to go home.  He’s had a good run, but honestly, he cannot keep up with the girls.  And this week, I think Melinda even pulled away from Jordin.  Take a good look America – Melinda Doolittle is your next American Idol.
