American Idol: The Final Three Return Home

Yes, it was going home week on “American Idol.” However, it didn’t seem like we saw as much fanfare at their hometowns as we normally did in past seasons. Not that I missed it! Each contestant did two songs – one chosen by the judges and one they chose.

Danny went home to Milwaukee. Paula chose “Dance Little Sister” by Terence Trent D’Arby, which Danny didn’t seem to know. Randy said it was the way to start off the night and it was “dope.” Kara liked the song, but she didn’t like the dancing. What is this? So You Think You Can Dance? Paula liked the dancing, but Simon thought it was desperate. He did like the vocals though, but trashed the “toy” saxophone guy.

Danny’s second song was “You are so Beautiful” by Joe Cocker. Randy said he loved that Danny showed he was here because he can “really, really, really sing.” Kara said it was stunning. Paula said it left her breathless. Simon said the song didn’t need rearranging but called it a vocal master class? Is that what he said? I was expecting him to say masterpiece, but I rewound it twice and it sounded like master class, whatever that means.

Kris, who went home to Arkansas and got a new cell phone from AT&T, was told by Randy and Kara that he was going to sing “Apologize” by One Republic. Kris seemed happier than Danny. That was a great song choice for Kris. Randy said Kris could have a hit with a song of this genre. Kara didn’t think was hit out of the park – she wanted him to make it different. Paula pointed out a loud, bum note, but said she was proud of him. Simon said Kara copped out by choosing the song, then blaming him for doing it. Are these two going to come to blows before the season is over? Simon called it a competent version, but not as good as the original.

Kris chose to sing “Heartless” by Kanye West. I liked this performance too. Randy said it was going to be a tough voting night because he liked that version better than the original – wow. Kara called the performance “fearless.” Simon said he had literally written Kris out of the competition. But, that changed after that performance.

Next up was San Diego’s favorite son Adam. He got a text from Simon asking him to sing “Run” by U2. Simon dropped names saying he had to call Bono to get permission for Adam to sing the song. Did Paula call Terence Trent D’Arby? Randy said Adam was still in the zone and was one of the hottest three. Um, Randy, there are only three left. But, he got booed when he said that he went a little off the melody, but said Adam was very talented. Kara called him an amazing strategist because he changed the song and made it unbelievable. Paula said it was miserable sitting next to Simon and his gloating. Simon said it was a brilliant song choice and brilliant performance. He also said if Adam was not in the final next week, it would be one of the biggest upsets ever.

Adam chose “Crying” by Aerosmith. Randy said he was one of the best singers they have had on the stage and he should be a rock star. Kara was puzzled by the notes he can hit. Kara and Paula both thought they would be seeing Adam next week in the finale. Simon said it was easy to assume Adam was going to sail through to the finale, but reminded everyone to vote to put him there.
