American Idol: The Top Ten Perform

This really is a really good season. I realized that tonight as I watched because it is really getting difficult for me to say who should go home. The theme tonight was singing a song from the year they were born. Ramielle opened it up with “Alone” (1987). She was fighting an illness, but Randy said it was pitchy and not the right song choice. Oddly enough, Simon said it wasn’t as bad as Randy said. Jason sang “Fragile” (1987), which almost put me to sleep. Simon told him it was too laid back and performances like that were not going to be enough to keep him there. Syesha sang “If I Were Your Woman” (1987) and blew the judges away. Randy said it was the best he had ever heard her sing, but Simon said the end wasn’t as good as Randy thought.

Chikezie sang a ballad, 1985’s “If Only For One Night.” Randy panned it as not hip and cool, but Paula thought it was a good throwback. Brooke had a misstart with “Every Breath You Take” (1983), but the judges praised her for composing herself and restarting. They all liked her and the piano, but not the band at the end. Michael sang “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” (1978). Randy said he used his “big ole voice” and Simon said he finally saw star potential. Carly sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (1983), which I thought would be great but like Randy and Simon said, something was missing. David A. sang “You’re the Voice” (1990), a song no one seemed to know. Randy said he had mad skills, but Simon said it was like a theme park performance, expecting animated creatures to appear and sing with him.

Kristy Lee sang 1984’ “God Bless America” and finally got praises from the judges. Paula said it sounded like her voice was getting stronger and Simon said it was the most cleaver song choice he had heard in years. David C. finished up the night with a rousing, yet odd version of “Billie Jean” (1982). It was good, but strange. However, Randy said he might be the one to win the whole lot and both Paula and Simon called him brave for his choice.

I think it will be either Ramielle or Chikezie going home this week. Personally, I like Chikezie better and would like for him to stay around another week, although with all the big voices coming out, I doubt he has what it takes to go all the way.
