American Idol: Top Four Perform
Tonight, the songbooks of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame was opened to the remaining four singers. Each would sing two songs, with Ryan making it very clear that the judges would critique the singers after each song. Didn’t want to have another “Paula moment.”
First up with David Cook. He sang “Hungry like the Wolf,” which Randy said was an okay choice. Paula said it left her with a big appetite, whatever that means, and Simon said it was good, but a bit of a copycat. David’s second song was “Baba O’Riley.” Randy said David had something different going on tonight, but it was still great. Simon put it simply – “Welcome back David Cook.”
Syesha made a mistake I think in taking on “Proud Mary” for her first song. She said it had been covered over 100 times, but guess which one everyone remembers – Tina Turner. And, Simon said it was like a bad, shrieking version of Tina. However, he did love her second song “A Change is Gonna Come.” He disagreed with Randy who said he didn’t love it as much as the first song. Paula praised her so much, she made her cry and Ryan had to scream, “We are running out of time, Hell’s Kitchen is coming on” to get everyone to move on.
Jason was just off tonight, but then in my opinion, he has been off for weeks. His first song was (shock) Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sherriff.” Boy, was he dreaded out for that one. Randy said it was really karaoke, Paula tried to say something nice, but even she said she wasn’t crazy about it, and Simon said it was utterly atrocious, like a first round audition. I think Jason would do great on “Jamaican Idol.” His second song, “Mr. Tambourine Man” was a bit better, but he lost some of the lyrics. Simon said, “I’d pack your suitcase.”
David Archuleta sang “Stand by Me,” a song, as my husband pointed out, that is four times as old as he is. Okay, not quite, but I was afraid the judges were going to diss him for choosing an old song, but they loved it. Randy said at least one singer came on the stage to win and Simon said it was the best performance so far. David’s second song “Love Me Tender” got even better reviews. Paula called it very beautiful and Simon said he didn’t beat the competition tonight, he crushed it.
It is time for Jason to go this week. He has stayed, in my opinion, far too long.
