American Idol: Top Ten Girls
It’s still 70’s night, but now it was the girl’s turn. Carly started off the night with “Crazy on You.” I thought she had the perfect voice for this song, kinda Ann Wilson, but Simon said it was not the right song for her. He said if she could find the right song, she would be the one to beat. Yeah, and they told Melinda Doolittle that last year.
Next up was Syesha singing “Me and Mr. Jones.” This is one of my favorite songs, so to hear anyone else sing it made me cringe. Simon called it indulgent and Randy said it was not a great song choice. Unfortunately, there was a lot of that going on this week. Brooke did well with “You’re So Vain,” which Randy felt was dedicated to Simon. Ramiele chose “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” Paula said she didn’t get to perform her magic and Simon agreed. He said that if she was one of the top three, but didn’t like this performance. Kristy Lee sang “You’re No Good.” All three judges agreed it was a vast improvement over last week, with Simon saying she had great potential.
Amanda blew it with “Carry On Wayward Son.” Simon said it was all too contrived, from the outfits to the hair. And speaking of her hair, I normally like it, but last night’s Lily Munster look was just frightening. Alaina sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” One of the big questions by Randy last night was “Do you love that song?” which typically meant he didn’t. He thought it was pitchy and not the right song choice. Simon said it was as if her grandmother had picked the song for her. Alexandrea sang “If You Leave Me Now.” Randy thought it was too safe and Simon thought she was struggling. Kady sang “Magic Man” – apparently, it was just a Heart night! Randy said she never found the notes. Simon was frustrated because she was so good on video and so not in person. Asia’h closed the night with “All By Myself.” She had been sick, but Paula and Randy thought she did a good job. Simon, however, said it was too big a song for her.
Who’s going home? Alaina’s song bored me, as did Kady’s “Magic Man.” Syesha may be in jeopardy and Alexandrea may be as well. Although Amanda had a rough night, I think the rockers will save her at least one more week (hopefully she can get things together).

It would have been so great if she had made “You’re So Vain” really obviously aimed at Simon - but maybe it’s too early in the competition for her to feel safe playing like that!
