American Idols: Music from the Movies
Quentin Tarantino was back on “American Idol” tonight, this time to mentor the contestants. Simon apologized to the viewers after last week’s blunder (DVRs all over the country cut off Adam’s performance) – of course, he blamed it on the girls talking too much. And, I just wonder who had the unfortunate job of trying to find dialogue from Tarantino films that was airable during primetime?
The theme tonight was Music from Movies. Allison sang “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” Once again, this 16 year old gave me goose bumps with her voice. Paula said she noticed that Allison possessed the same authenticity that Adam did. Simon said it was barbecue sauce – hot and spicy – and Allison was the girl’s only hope in the competition. Oh, so we only got to hear from Paula and Simon. The four judge comment thing was a drag anyhow, so I am glad they’ve shortened it.
Anoop sang “Everything I Do, I Do for You,” which concerned Tarantino. He wanted it rough. Randy said it was a huge song, but Anoop has found his zone. Kara felt it was one of his best performances.
Adam did “Born to be Wild” from Easy Rider. Tarantino called him the real deal. Like I said before, unless the hand of God comes down and strikes this kid, he is the next American Idol. If Adam had been born in the ‘30s, he would have been Elvis. He’s good, he’s original, and the crowds love, love, love him. Paula called him one of the bravest contestants she had ever witnessed. Simon said he didn’t think the performance would be as popular as the one last week. Well, someone has to rain on his parade – thank goodness for Simon.
Matt sang “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman.” What, was it Bryan Adams night? I know the judges compare Matt to Justin Timberlake, but to me, he looks a bit like Michael Buble. It sounded like he goofed the lines just a bit towards the end. I only know this because I’ve seen Don Juan DeMarco like 500 times. Randy said it was a bit rough at times. Kara called it the constant struggle between choosing a rock song and a soul song.
Danny was up next with “Endless Love.” Hum, I love the original, so Danny’s version didn’t quite do it for me. Paula said she wasn’t sure the key shouldn’t have been lowered at first, but he pulled it together. Simon said he can’t fault the singing, but was disappointed in the harp and traditional version of the song.
Kris sang “Falling Slowly.” Tarantino said he lived up to the theme the most of all the contestants. You know, it makes me sad to watch some of the other contestants now because they are good, but they don’t have the oomph of Adam. Randy said it never quite caught on for him and was pitchy. Kara disagreed and said it was one of his best moments.
Lil ended the night with “The Rose.” Once again, it was a big song that she could do a lot with. I liked the gospel spin she put on it, but Simon wasn’t happy with the song choice, saying it was too soft. Lil talked back to him – oh, Lil, did you not see what happened to Megan?
So, who’s in trouble? I’d say Lil or maybe Matt, although I think he has a bigger fan base than Lil.
