An interesting evening on DWTS
This week I wasn’t too sure what to expect on Dancing With The Stars. There were going to be four “new” dances performed(new because they had never been on the show before): West Coast Swing, the Hustle, Salsa, and the Jitterbug. The only dance I was vaguely familiar with is the Jitterbug. Here’s how I saw the show, in the order the dances were performed.
West Coast Swing. The first couple up was Lance and Lacey. Lacey is actually a champion in West Coast Swing, and her father was one in the 70’s. I had never even heard of the dance so I have no idea how it is supposed to be performed. Watching the performance you could see a different Lacey. She seemed very comfortable, confident and sure. I kind of watched her and not Lance and this was a major problem. The judges took her over the coals for this performance. They all thought she focused too much on her performance and not enough on Lance. Len said that she needed to give up her talent in order to show off her partner more. Bruno said that Lance was merely window dressing for Lacey and the title of the show was not Dancing Around the Stars. Carrie Ann said that her goal in this show is to make Lance a champion and that she didn’t pay enough attention to him this week. Even with all the critical comments they still got a score of 21 out of 30.
Toni and Alec were up next. I liked their performance, but again I have no idea how the dance is supposed to look so to me it was great. Len thought the performance lacked excitement, while Carrie Ann said she was over dancing. They ended up with 22 out of 30.
Hustle. I kind of think of “Saturday Night Fever” when I hear the word Hustle and I’m not sure if that is an accurate comparison or not. Susan and Tony were up first, and I thought her dance was very lady like. It was an amazing performance considering that she has two broken bones in her feet, a fact that wasn’t lost on Carrie Ann. Bruno called it an Uptown Girl Hustle (that it didn’t quite make it to Times Square yet) and Len thought that Tony is treating Susan like a China doll. They got a 22 out of 30.
Warren and Kym danced second. It was a good performance and the first one of the night where you could feel that they were having fun. As always Warren amazes me being so light on his feet for such a big guy. The judges liked it. Bruno said he really knows how to “funk” (at least that’s what I thought he said – listening to him after that word makes me wonder if he meant another four letter word) while Len and Carrie Ann thought it was fun and enjoyable. They got 25 out of 30.
Salsa. Cloris and Corky danced first, and it’s always interesting to see what Cloris pulls out of her bag of tricks. Or it could be Corky’s bag – I’m not too sure. Let me just say that when I am 82 years old I hope I can move as well as she does on the dance floor. She really brings a lot of fun and life into the performance. I thought I heard Carrie Ann make a comment that this is a dance competition, but didn’t the judges say last week they would be judging performance more than technique in this round of competition? Bruno thought that she actually did the Salsa, but one that was performed after drinking a pitcher of margaritas. They ended up with 21 out of 30.
Maurice and Cheryl were next. The judges had given him a hard time last week, and Cheryl gave him a really hard time in rehearsals this week (at least in the footage the producers decided to air). The judges loved his performance and I thought it was pretty good too. I’m not familiar with the Salsa so I wasn’t sure what to expect and let’s face it – Cloris gives great performances but they aren’t always exactly the way a dance should look. The judges thought it was well done and full of energy. They got 9’s from all the judges, ending up with a total of 27 out of 30.
Jitterbug. Both of the professionals mentioned they had no idea how to perform or teach this dance. You would never know it by their performances, the two best performances of the night. Brooke and Derek were up first, dancing to an Elvis song (and for the life of me I know it but can’t recall it right now). It was great – full of fun and showmanship. The judges loved it. Carrie Ann called it perfect, while Bruno thought it was a glorious and stylish rendition of the Jitterbug. Len made a comment that he had the same hairstyle as the one on Derek tonight in 1959. They got a score of 29 out of 30, with Len being the hold out.
Cody and Julianne ended the evening with what I thought was an even better performance than the one of Derek and Brooke. Though her granny panties did give me the creeps. Carrie Ann thought it was the perfect dance for Cody and that it suited him very well. She gave them a 10, while Bruno and Len gave them 9’s. They both loved the performance, but I guess not enough to give it 10’s. The score of 28 out of 30 drew boos from the audience.
I think based on last week (meaning finding out who was in the bottom 2) that Cloris could be in danger of going home. Of course her fans could rally and she might be saved. I mean, who wouldn’t love to see the old girl do hip hop?

I was watching DWTS tonight and she was very disrepectful of Cloris Leachman. She said we lost Toni Braxton for this? What a no talent B*TCH. Why is Carrie Ann even on the show? She is past her prime. ABC get rid of her!!
