Anthony wins season 1 of Shear Genius

I was actually a bit disappointed by tonight’s finale on Shear Genius.  Maybe it was because I thought last week’s photo shoot challenge was so awesome that anything less than that would be a disappointment.  I just think that the remaining three contestants had done a lot better work at other points in the competition.  The finale was almost a let down.  While Anthony was named the winner of season 1 of Shear Genius, I think he put out a lot better styles in the celebrity look a like challenge and the wedding challenge.

There was no shortcut challenge this week, just the final challenge.  It was based on the basics of hair styling – cut, color and creativity.  The three contestants had to create a story and three distinct hair styles that worked with a designer wardrobe.  I guess I’m not all that artsy fartsy so I don’t get into the whole story and conceptual design part of this evening.  I just wanted to see some good hairstyles.  The stylists had three hours to create three distinct hairstyles.  One had to utilize color; one had to recreate Vidal Sassoon’s signature Nancy Kwan bob; the final style could be their choice.

Daisy told a story based on the S curl, since the S shape was the basis of the curl.  She was a little too ambitious in the final challenge and didn’t have enough time to put out the styles she wanted to show.  They were a bit unfinished.  Anthony’s story was based on modern movement.  To me all three hairstyles kind of looked the same.  Ben told a story about the transformation from outer beauty to inner beauty.  His first style, an updo, was really kind of poorly done.  I think if he had done something else, anything else, he might have won the competition.

The judges said straight out that the finalists were equally qualified and that they had to make the decision on the winner based on the results of the final challenge.  That being said Anthony deserved to win because he was the only stylist to show three finished and polished styles.  Both Daisy and Ben had trouble with one of their styles and that was probably the reason they were not named Shear Genius.
