In my case my son's Mother stayed around until our son was 18 then promply changed enough to discolor the image she had as a mother to especially her son. Once gone she never really tried to connect with her son. To a degree Apolo never having known his mother or having to reconcil one caring/loving with another who lets say was...not may be easier. I only was a single Father for the time since my son was 18 but can sympathize with Yuki the Father and can see how much love he has for his son...
