Biggest Loser 2005 Upcoming First Episode
Would you be willing to put yourself out on the line for all to see – half naked with every bump and bulge showing – on national television? Would you be willing to tolerate the demands of a personal trainer forcing you into physical activities you never thought your body could perform? Would you lock yourself away with 13 strangers for an undetermined amount of time, unable to see family and friends? Would you be willing to stand on a scale for the world to know just how overweight you really are? If I told you that you could win $250,000 by doing this would you consider it?
This season’s first episode of The Biggest Loser aired last night on NBC. We began the show by meeting the 14 contestants - 7 men and 7 women. If you missed any of them last night, you can go to NBC’s web site by clicking here The Biggest Looser to read about each of the contestants.
As the contestants arrived at the main house on the ranch, they were led into a room of food. Every kind of unhealthy, fatty, junk food you could think about was in here – fried chicken, hot dogs, candy, pizza and donuts. The contestants were given 30 minutes to eat whatever and as much of it as they wanted. I have to admit it was pretty disgusting watching these people supposedly committed to losing weight and changing their lives gorging out as if it was a Roman orgy. As soon as the contestants finished making pigs of themselves, they were led into the 24 Hour Fitness gym and then to the scale. Too bad the host of the show Caroline Rhea didn’t start the tour of the house there. Maybe a few less donuts would have been consumed.
At this point in the show the contestants were divided into two teams – men versus women. The team who would lose the most weight (translated into a percentage of total body weight lost) would win that week.
The first weigh in was the next morning. The women (blue team) weighed a total of 1,642 pounds while the men (red team) weighed 2,383 pounds. After the weigh in the teams were introduced to their trainers. Jillian is the trainer for the red team, while Bob is the trainer for the Blue team.
The first challenge for the teams was called the “Diet Rite Zero Gravity Challenge” (you’ve just got to love corporate sponsorship!). This gave the contestants the opportunity to experience weightlessness. The plane went up to 34,000 feet and then did a 30 second nose dive to create the weightless environment. The teams were given 30 seconds to collect ping pong balls into a pouch. The team who won would get to add 5 pounds to one of the contestants on the other team at the next weigh in. The men won this challenge.
Ten days later was the first “official” weigh in. The team that lost the least amount of weight lost for the week, and one of the members would get voted off. However, the person on the team that lost the most weight would get immunity. The men gave the penalty weight of 5 pounds to Suzanne, but it didn’t matter because the women won anyway. Matt won immunity this week.
The men decided to eliminate Ruben. The consensus was that he wasn’t working up to his full potential. When the show showed us how Ruben was doing now he looked great. He has lost 63 pounds total since he arrived at the ranch and is on pace to lose even more.
