Biggest Loser Couples: Bernie is eliminated

I TiVo’d Biggest Loser: Couples last night because it was on against American Idol.  So I sat down this afternoon while the kids were napping to watch the show.  And what did I have next to me - M&M’s.  Of course after watching the temptation challenge I am not sure that I’ll look at junk food the same way again for a while.

The temptation had to do with snacking.  There was a vending machine hidden from view where the remaining seven contestants could go to select a snack.  The machine was filled with all kinds of junk food.  However there was a golden ticket in the vending machine - a one pound pass that could be used at the next weigh in.  Each contestant would make a selection and then have to eat the junk food that came out.  If they got a pack of gum they got a free pass - they did not have to eat the junk food from their next selection and there was also a cash value assigned to each pack of gum.  If the contestant got the free pass the game was over.  You could decide to quit whenever you wanted to, but you had to eat the junk food you selected.  All seven of the contestants decided to participate, and five of them one the free pass - only Kelly and Dan did not get the one pound pass to use at the next weigh in.  It was pretty disgusting watching Kelly and Dan downing the snack foods.  I thought Kelly would puke if she did not quit when she did.  That’s my reference to not looking at snack foods the same for a while.

Next Bernie goes up to the top of the mountain to select his reward for being the biggest loser of the previous week.  He selects gameplay because he realizes that the black team might need some help in the next challenge and weigh in.  His prize - he is able to grant immunity to any other player but can’t give it to himself.  He decides to wait on making a decision based on how well things go over the next day or so.

The contestants are brought back to the hospital where they visited at the beginning of the show to find out how their health has improved.  Dr. Huizenga said that when they first visited they were in critical condition, but now he would describe them as being in fair condition - they are on the brink of making some significant health improvements but it’s going to be up to them to maintain their weight loss.  Many of the contestants have made improvements and everyone is in good spirits over the results of the tests.  Dr. Huizenga brings in a guest to motivate the remaining contestants on maintaining their weight loss and surprise, surprise it’s Dr. Jeff from season 2 of Biggest Loser.  He tells them that the show has saved his life and describes himself as an obesity survivor.  He says you are never cured of obesity - you just have to learn to live in a way that prevents you from putting the weight back on.

The challenge this week involved a zip line over a 500 foot ravine.  The contestant would be harnessed onto the zip line and had to pull themselves across the ravine grabbing flags as they went.  The team that got the most flags would win an awesome reward - the chance to be a fighter pilot for a day courtesy of Air Combat USA.  Maggie is selected as the person to sit out the challenge for the black team.

Bernie and Roger go first and it’s pretty even, but the black team comes out on top with Bernie grabbing all 14 flags.  Jay and Kelly go next and there is some concern since Jay is afraid of heights but he kicks butt and grabs all 14 flags.  The blue team is ahead at this point, 27 to 24.  Dan and Brittnay are the final two up and Dan gets all 14 flags so the blue team wins the challenge.

After the challenge the black team gathers together and they ask Bernie what he got for being the biggest loser of the week.  He tells them about the immunity card and asks the others how they can best use it for their advantage.  They talk about giving it to Jay on the blue team so Roger or Dan will have to be eliminated since they are seen as very big threats.  The team tells Bernie that the final decision will be up to him since he won the card.

At the weigh in Allison drops the bombshell that there will be no more teams starting right now.  The dreaded yellow line is back and everyone is at risk for elimination - everyone that is, except for whoever Bernie gives the immunity card to.  He decides to give it to his original partner Brittnay, since he said that without her he would not have made it as far as he did.

At the weigh in the bottom two were Kelly and Bernie.  If Bernie had not given Brittnay his immunity card then Brittnay would have been below the yellow line along with Kelly.  The elimination vote is three to two - the black team votes for Kelly while the three members of the former blue team vote for Bernie.  Roger cast the deciding vote and says that he wanted to keep his promise he made to Kelly weeks ago when Kelly helped to keep him from elimination.  Bernie was sent home, but from what we saw is doing very well with his weight loss.  He’s down to 175 pounds and has lost a total of 88 pounds since starting on the Biggest Loser.
