Can Taylor Pull it Off
Last night was the night we have been anxiously awaiting for weeks. After all the Bobby Bennets and Kevin Covais’ have been sent home, we are left with the final two contestants: Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee. Katharine always seemed to have had a chance at the finale, but Taylor was the long shot. In the beginning, Simon told him he would not make the final group, but later admitted his mistake.
Each contestant had three songs to sing tonight. I thought Katharine did a great job of “Black Horse in a Cherry Tree”, but maybe I just like the song because Simon though it was good “with a small ‘g’” and the “occasion was bigger than the song.” Judging the contestants as he would prizefighters, Simon declared Taylor the winner of Round 1 with his performance of “Living for the City.” However, he gave Round 2 to Katharine when she did ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” although I was frankly tired to hear it again so soon.
Tied neck in neck, going into the final round, the contestants sang songs written for them. Katharine’s song “My Destiny” was good, but did not do much for any of the judges. You know when Randy starts out with “You look amazing tonight” that your song was just “alight.” Taylor did a much better job with his song “Do I Make You Proud?” He must have because Simon declared “Assuming that I was right — the show was tied — then you have just won ‘American Idol.”
I am hoping Taylor wins, but we will just have to watch the final show to see how voting went. Also, all 12 finalist will return for the last show of the season.
