Carmen is eliminated from Project Runway in episode 3
I was really interested to see what the challenge would be on Project Runway tonight, because we kept seeing the teasers that it was a challenge never before done and that it was the hardest ever. What was the challenge? Making menswear. Before I go into my take of the show, I know I’ve seen menswear on the show before, specifically in season 2 and in season 3. In season 2 the designers did makeovers on each other, with Chloe Dao winning the challenge by creating an outfit for Nick. In season 3 the designers had to create an outfit for a jet setter (themselves) and that meant the men had to design for themselves. Jeffrey won that challenge. Maybe they meant as an across the board challenge, who knows.
Heidi sends the designers on a field trip to meet up with Tim Gunn and the client for the challenge, Tiki Barber (New York Giants retired player and currently a correspondent on the Today show). The challenge was for the designers to create an outfit that Tiki could wear while appearing on the Today show. He mentions several challenges that his body has – a big neck, skinny waist, and what he describes as a big butt.
Most of the designers are very stressed, because as a whole they are not menswear designers. You can see how they struggled with the drawings and with buying fabrics. Jack asks if they can use the clothes they are wearing for patterns, and Tim tells them to make it work. He (Jack) takes off his shorts and uses them for a pattern. He also shares the pattern with Carmen and Victorya, which makes several of the other designers (specifically Rami) cry foul. Jack chalks it up to jealousy.
Near the end of day two of the challenge Tim brings in Ginny Barber, Tiki’s wife, to critique the designs. Some of her comments were unnerving to Carmen, because she realized that she did not buy enough fabric to restyle the retro 80’s looking jacket she was creating.
The runway show was interesting. There really were not many outfits I liked. I liked those created by Kit, Rami and Kevin. Pretty much I did not like the other outfits. The judges had Jack, Kevin and Kit in their top three, with Jack being named the winner. I did not care for Jack’s outfit because I thought it was too many stripes. What do I know?
The bottom three designers were Carmen, Ricky and Sweet P. Carmen did not even send a shirt down the runway, just a draping of fabric to represent the shirt she had wanted to create. Ricky’s suit (which Heidi described as boring if made perfectly) was held together by pins. Sweet P had a crazy finished product of a shirt with the sleeves too short and the collar way too big. Heidi said that she thought the designers must have thought they were better than they really are. Ouch.
In the end the bottom two designers were Ricky and Carmen, with Carmen being eliminated. I guess the bigger fashion sin is to not send down an article of clothing instead of sending down a garment that is unfinished but all the pieces are there in some form.
