Danna is eliminated from Shear Genius
I begin this rambling by asking a few questions about Shear Genius. Is it me or are these contestants 100 times more catty than on Project Runway and Top Chef, or do you think it’s just the way the show is being edited? And when the contestants are told that this was their final cut do they get way too mushy and emotional or is it just me? You don’t see anyone bursting into tears on Top Chef or Project Runway or even Top Design for that matter. Maybe hairstylists are just more sensitive than chefs, fashion designers, and interior designers, or again maybe it is the way the show is being edited. All I know is that there are very few likeable characters left on the show.
The short cut challenge this evening had the famous stylist Cristophe as the guest judge. The stylists were to give a new look to their male clients in the Men’s Makeover Challenge. Jacyln Smith indicated that he was the stylist for Hollywood stars as well as people in the White House, so I had to Google him. He’s the hairstylist that gave former President Clinton the $200 haircut while on Air Force One. I digress. The contestants were given one hour to complete the transformation. Tabatha and Dr. Boogie were picked as the top two stylists, with Tabatha being named the winner.
The contestants return to their loft for a surprise. There are seven hat boxes with the name of an era on them, and hair accessories appropriate for the era contained inside. Tabatha had first choice of era and then would assign everyone else an era. Here’s who got what: Tabatha – 80’s punk rock; Anthony – 1960’s; Tyson – Elizabethan; Dr. Boogie – Medieval; Ben – 1920’s; Danna – 1940’s and Daisy – Victorian. Again strategy came into play when Tabatha assigned Tyson the Elizabethan period, as she thought he would fail in doing a complex up-do.
The models were pre assigned to the eras, so there was no choice there for the stylists. They were given two hours to complete the Hair Through the Eras Challenge.
Since I’m not really familiar with hairstyles of the past I don’t feel as if I could really say who did a good job and who did a poor job. Ken Paves (hair stylist to Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and a regular on Home Shopping Network) was the guest judge for the elimination challenge. The judges liked Tyson’s style (calling it inspired) and Daisy’s (saying it captured the romantic elegance and innocence of the period). They did not like Anthony or Danna’s styles, saying they could have done some really sexy hair styles and the styles they did were not true reflections of the era. Danna was eliminated, and as Dr. Boogie said she fell curse to the Allure magazine wall of fame curse.
For whatever reason, tonight after the show I was reading the credits. Do you know that there is actually a disclaimer saying that you should “never use objects to cut hair that are not intended for that purpose” and that you should “use all appropriate safety precautions when cutting hair”. I don’t know who I should blame for this absolutely absurd disclaimer. Should we blame the litigious society in which we live, or should we blame the producers of the show for having such an outrageous challenge in which wire cutters and hedge trimmers were used to cut hair.
