Does reality television help has been stars?
Reality television has been a great vehicle for some has-been stars or some C and D list stars to revive their careers. Dancing with the Stars has been a perfect vehicle for these stars to put a jolt in their career – Mario Lopez hosting a beauty pageant and John O’Hurley releasing a learn to dance video are two examples. Sometimes a stint on reality television doesn’t work as well for a star. Gary Coleman, the former child star of Different Strokes, was a cast member for The Surreal Life 2 on VH1. Now he’s doing commercials for personal loans on television.
Maybe it is a good tie-in for Coleman and his notoriety. There were issues about his finances in the past, so having him be a spokesperson for a personal loan service fits nicely into his persona. Personally I don’t think his time on The Surreal Life was well spent, as it didn’t do much for his career. You can’t criticize a person trying to make a living, and what do many former child stars have other than the fact that they were once television stars? I just wonder what some other has-been stars will be doing next, and what products we’ll see them endorse on television.
