Dr. Boogie eliminated on Shear Genius
I think tonight’s episode of Shear Genius was the best one to date. In fact, I wonder if this challenge would have been better suited for the finale, but then again I’m sure the producers have something fabulous planned for next week. They mentioned Vidal Sassoon as playing a key role in the finale. That should be interesting.
The shortcut challenge this week had to do with African American hair – specifically, the contestants had to produce a straight looking style for their models. You could see what contestants had experience working on this type of hair and who didn’t – Ben. Ben seemed to be in way over his head in the challenge. Then again, Ben seemed to be over his head this entire episode but pulled it off at the end. Anthony won the shortcut challenge and would have first choice of model for the elimination challenge.
The contestants were taken to the studios of celebrity photographer/director Matthew Rolston to find out about their elimination challenge – to style hair for one of his shoots. He had four “themes” in mind, and Anthony got to pick his first and assign themes to everyone else. I can’t remember all the names of the styles, but Anthony had to do hair for a model lying on her back with her hair standing up; Daisy had to do a sex kitten look for a model with wet hair; Ben had to do a rocker style with the hair vertical; Dr. Boogie had to do a style that would look wind blown. Daisy rocked with her style – it looked really good without being too soggy. Anthony had some problems with his hairstyle, specifically the model’s regrowth. He had to try and fix it while on set and since he got kind of nervous doing it, the fix took quite a long time. Ben was really struggling with the challenge until he got on set with Rolston. After that he found his inspiration and produced a really great style. Dr. Boogie took over his shoot, and Michael Carl actually said in jest that it appeared that Dr. Boogie was trying to be Matthew Rolston.
The judges liked Ben’s and Daisy’s work, with Daisy being named the winner. Anthony squeaked by into the finale, and Dr. Boogie was sent packing. I’m surprised – Boogie was a really strong personality and the producers usually like to have that in a finals. Anthony, Ben and Daisy seem pretty nice and normal, a surprise for the finals of a reality television program.
