DWTS: Did I see a lift?

I may have just dreamed it, because hawk eye Carrie didn’t mention it, but I could have sworn I saw Maks lift Mel during one of the spins in their paso doble.

Before I give my critique of this evening’s performances, I must give a bravo to the Hough siblings.  What a job they have done.  Julianne has already proven herself a winner with Apolo Ono last season, and she is absolutely astonishing with Helio this season.  But Derek, this young man has taken a lump of sand and turned it into at least a CZ.  He’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

First on the floor was Marie and Jonathan.  What showmanship!  Their first dance to Good Mornin from Singing in the Rain was great.  I’m a product of the 50’s musicals and I could picture Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor in my minds eye performing to that number.  Now, they were not Gene and Debbie and Donald, but their quickstep had all the elements.  How about that “strip” mambo!  Bringing her brothers in at the end was a stroke of showmanship.  Not the most technical mambo, but who could fault the entertainment value.  I would love to see them go further.

Up next, Maks and Mel with the Viennese waltz.  To some of the most awful waltz music they danced an excellent waltz.  It was excellent, but I wasn’t wowed.  I wasn’t wowed with the paso either.  They are clearly two of the top dancers in the field, and perhaps we expect more.  The judges gave them a perfect score on both dances; but I’m sure I saw a lift!

Jennie has improved a thousand times, but she still gives me the impression that she is uncomfortable.  That poor me bit is wearing a little thin.  The beginning of the tango and the finish of the cha cha were excellent, but I still watch him; and the female is supposed to be the focus of the dances.  Still, how can one relate to the AWFUL music?

Helio and Julianne kicked some dancing butt with their performances of the fox trot and the cha cha.  Their presence and performance make them to ones to beat.  This was the first hip hop cha cha I’ve seen.  I wonder if they have the fan base to take them to the finals.

Tomorrow is the day of reckoning, my guess is that Jennie and Derek will be the ones leaving, but I haven’t been right yet.
