DWTS: Halfway there

While DWTS is halfway to it’s conclusion, the producers in their infinite wisdom decided to include four new dances to the competition.  Is it because they felt the contestants were not able to produce with the standard 10 ballroom dances, or are they trying to get a larger viewing audience?  Maybe they feel Lacey will fit in better with these lesser known dances, and nobody will be able to pick apart her boo boos.

We’ll begin with the West Coast Swing.  Years ago I saw this done on tv in a ballroom competition, and tonight’s dances did not bring up any memories of the performance I saw.  However, this was the best Lacey looked in the entire competition, maybe the fact her father was a champ in this venue has something to do with it.  Lance however used his time to make a lot of facial expressions.  He tried, fell, but tried, and she did 90 % of the dancing.  Now Toni and Alec were a somewhat different story.  They were better than Lance and Lacey, but not all that great.  Alec is always great in my book.  To me this dance was mostly show dancing on both parts.  Their scores were comparable, 21 and 22.

Next we have the Hustle.  Susan and Tony began, and it was kind of a Walk Quickly, Not Hustle type of dance.  She looks wonderful, and she did have a foot injury.  Why do they always give Tony the dancers a shade past their prime, still wonderfully attractive, but having problems with the dance?  Anyway for a Studio 54 Alum, she did a good Uptown Girl Hustle.  Now Warren and Kym were a different matter altogether.  That was a hustle, gimmick steps and all.  Move over John Travolta, Warren Sapp is Here and his score, 25, proves it!

Heaven Help us All – Cloris does the Salsa!  While we all held our collective breath, she did it again.   The aging Cantina dancer and the gigolo, at least that how it looked to me.  Once again Cloris brings raunch to the floor with humor.  Time to go home senora.  Maurice and Cheryl also did the salsa to the most awful music.  They were very energetic and it seemed like a half-mambo salsa to me.  The judges liked it and gave them a good score.

You are getting into my territory with the Jitterbug.  The Houghs and their partners, youngest in the group gave performances that were fine to behold.  Brooke and Derek looked as though they stepped out of the movie Grease, and even though the internet was the source of his reference; they were very entertaining.  Judges thought so -29.  Cody and Julianne were also throwbacks.  I couldn’t decide if it were Lucy and Desi meets the dance floor, or the Cleavers rock.   Neither Hough thought to include any touch of the Lindy in their Jitterbug.  I bet Len knows how to do the Lindy.  Anyway they got a 28.  Sibling rivalry at it’s best.

I think this might be the week Cloris fades into the sunset.  Who knows?
