DWTS: Jive, Viennese Waltz and farewell to Misty May-Treanor
This week of Dancing With The Stars had nine couples remaining. Misty May-Treanor injured herself on Friday and wasn’t even introduced in the beginning. Tom Bergeron assures us that she will come on the air later to speak exclusively about her injury.
Here’s my take on the performances:
The two dances that will be performed this week are the Viennese Waltz and the Jive. Susan and Tony start off the night with their Jive. She is also injured – she rolled over on her ankle in practice this morning. Their dance seemed to be in slow motion to me, but once I found out she was injured it made sense. Len thought she did a very good job. Bruno was more enamored with her boobs than her dancing. He’s definitely hot for Susan. Carrie Ann thought she looked a bit timid and that bummed her out because she always thinks of Susan as a strong woman. The judges gave them 7’s across the board for a score of 21 out of 30.
Lance and Lacey were up next with their Viennese Waltz. I hated it. I think that Bruno was right on when he said this performance lacked the freedom he’s seen in his other dances. Carrie Ann loved it, saying it was traditional yet contemporary. Len had to be Len and dole out the criticism to Lance (I don’t think he likes Lance or Lacey very much) but in the end said it was the best dance he’s performed so far. They scored 22 out of 30.
Maurice and Cheryl performed their Jive next. I thought it was fun and I enjoyed the performance. All three of the judges liked it. Carrie Ann said it was fantastic. Len thought it was his best dance so far, and said this was “more like it.” Bruno said that Maurice could rock when he wanted to and said the dance was well done. They gave them a score of 24 out of 30.
The next couple to perform was Rocco and Karina, doing a Viennese Waltz. It really wasn’t too bad overall. Rocco comes over so likeable here, and that’s hard for me to get because my only other experience with watching him was on Top Chef where he could be a really cocky and arrogant guy. The judges were split on the performance. Bruno didn’t like it, saying it was like a lump of mashed potatoes. Len said he didn’t mind it and that overall he did a pretty good job. Carrie Ann called him the most improved of all the dancers and that this was a marked improvement over his performance last week. She also said that Rocco had a likeable puppy dog quality (huh?). They ended up with a score of 20 out of 30.
Warren and Kym danced next, doing a Viennese Waltz. The judges loved it. Len thought this dance would be his stumbling block but it wasn’t. He said he’s giving the skinny people a run for their money. Bruno said that Warren has an uncanny ability to get the character of each dance and that this one was beautifully done. Carrie Ann thinks she has a crush on Warren and said the performance was gorgeous. The judges rewarded them with a score of 25 out of 30.
Cody and Julianne were the next couple to perform, doing a Jive. It started off really well but then they kind of slowed down, and both Len and Bruno pointed this out to them. Bruno said that Cody has the talent and needs to use it. Carrie Ann said it was awkward at times and that she hated the fact she could see him counting the beat. They got a score of 21 out of 30.
Toni and Alec were up next, doing a Viennese Waltz. Toni said she wanted to do something different this week and she and Alec did a performance that was, to say the least, unconventional. Len and Bruno hated it. They both said that she was too good a dancer to use gimmicks and that she doesn’t need to do them the way a weaker dancer would have to use them. Carrie Ann loved it. She said she got it and that the Viennese Waltz originally was a scandalous dance and she loved the fact that they brought a bit of scandal back to the performance. She did make a comment that made a lot of sense to me. She said that when you take a big risk and go way over the edge it becomes a matter of taste. Given the comments of Len and Bruno I was surprised when she got 7’s from them. Carrie Ann gave her an 8, leaving them with a score of 22 out of 30.
Cloris and Corky were the next couple, performing a Jive. At least that was the dance they were assigned. Let’s face it, an 80+ year old woman isn’t going to be able to do a true Jive. What she gave the fans and the audience was a performance. Bruno said that to call it wacky would be an understatement. Carrie Ann said she was left speechless by the performance. She did say that what Cloris lacked in technique she made up for with her charisma. It wasn’t surprising that the judges gave her a low score of 16 out of 30.
Brooke and Derek were the last couple to perform tonight, doing a Viennese Waltz. The producers left the best for last. Even though the couple had a fight this week (and Derek was knocked unconscious in practice) they were able to give a stunning performance. Len said it was the best dance of the season so far, and Bruno kept repeating that it was beautiful. Carrie Ann said that Brooke was fast becoming her favorite dancer of all seasons and that she is incredible to watch. They got the first 10 of the season from Len and ended up with a score of 28 out of 30.
The show wrapped up with an interview with Misty May-Treanor. During a rehearsal on Friday she ruptured her Achilles Tendon. She is having the surgery to repair it tomorrow. It was nice to see how Rocco and Karina rushed to her side to help her – Karina brought ice while Rocco rubbed her back. Even Tom Bergeron said that even though it was an obvious question he needed to ask what this meant to her status on the show. She said that she was out of dancing but not out of cheering on everyone else. After a commercial break she returned with all of the other contestants standing on the stage. Tom asked her what this means for her volleyball career. She said that she was planning on taking some time off anyway and now she’ll get some time to spend with her husband. She did say that if there was a good time for this to happen (in terms of her athletic career) this would be it. Maks came over with her on stage and seemed emotional. He really liked her (it was obvious) and Misty May shattered his image of being a jerk, saying that he is a really sweet and emotional guy.
I’m sorry that Misty May had to leave the competition this way. She had a good chance of winning. At the end of the interview she said that when she gets healthy she wants to come back and dance the Jive. Samantha said that they’ll have her back on a results show in a future season.

How nice for Samantha to say that! Just when does she get to pick the participants? I think they could come back and start from the beginning as real contestants.
