DWTS: Kind of a flat finale
Maybe the stars were nervous, but I felt the performances this show did not come up to previous ones. Somehow I was a little more dazzled in finales past with the performances of a Jerry Rice or Emmet Smith, Apolo Ono or Drew Lachey, Laila Ali and Stacey Keebler. Was I just looking for more than the celebrities could deliver? Who can say.
The crowd was rowdy and raucous and really ready to go. Could they have stopped off at a local watering hole before the show? The judges were extremely picky; maybe they should have stopped off at the watering hole with the crowd.
Mel and Maks started off with a cha cha. Mel did a Marie and jumped into her hubbie’s lap. She also had the Spice Girls in the audience. If nothing else, Mel has really gotten into fantastic shape; her body is incredible, and although the cha cha was very good, I wasn’t blown away and I have been blown away with some of her earlier dances. In the freestyle, just as expected Maks carried the show with his jumps and splits and gyrations, but again it didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
Next we have the consummate entertainer Marie with her partner Jonathan. Last time she fainted after the samba, this time she had lots of body movement and worked the house to the nth degree, but again I wasn’t blown away. I have to disagree with the judges, I thought the broken wind-up doll concept in the freestyle was original and innovative. Jonathan really knows how to choreograph to Marie’s strong points.
The jive is not Helio’s best dance, and despite the enthusiasm and smile and Julianne, not blown away again. This dance was much better that his previous jive. Now the race driver theme in their free dance was a crowd pleaser. Julianne can make anybody look good. I think Helio peaked a couple of weeks ago and reached his plateau and there he dances. Good but not spectacular.
All this sarcasm notwithstanding Dancing With the Stars is still the most enjoyable way to spend an hour on television. It is one heck of a good representation of family entertainment. Tomorrow night - two hours. By the way, I couldn’t get through the phone lines to vote. I guess a lot of other people agree with me that this show is great.

I agree that the idea of the doll dance could have worked well - it would have masked the fact that her techical skills are not equal to Mel or Helio. I think that she did not do enough dancing, just a lot of acting. Had she done some more dancing it might have been a bit more successful with the judges.
