DWTS premier night two: the female celebrities perform
Night two of the season premier of the ninth season of Dancing With The Stars. It’s ladies night. The female pros opened the show with a group number to “She’s a Lady” and while it was good, it wasn’t as good as the guys last night. And what is it with Karina’s costume? VH1 banned Cher’s video “If I Could Turn Back Time” from early airing with a similar costume. Just an observation. The couples would perform an individual dance, either a Salsa or a Viennese Waltz and a relay dance tonight.
First up tonight: Debi Mazar and Maksim Chmerkovskiy performing a Salsa. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Len and Bruno commented on her potential overall, but mentioned the dance was not so good – she was missing hip action, having problems with timing, and whatever. Carrie Ann said she had a lot of guts but expected to see more sass on her face. Instead she saw her thought process – did I do that right, what’s next, etc. They scored 16 out of 30.
Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas danced second, performing the Viennese Waltz. I liked her performance, but I might have been biased by the music (that song is on my iPod right now). The judges weren’t as excited about her performance as I was. Bruno said it was prim, proper, and adequate but lacked a bit of magic. He thought this might be because she was so nervous. Carrie Ann said there was an elegance to her, but she was missing or lacking a connection to the music. Len said overall it was OK. Really generous there Len. They scored 18 out of 30.
Mya and Dmitry Chaplin were the next couple to perform, dancing a Viennese Waltz. She was great and looked beautiful. But the performance caused a bit of a stir among the judges. Carrie Ann and Bruno thought the performance was great. Carrie Ann said she set the bar for the night while Bruno called her artistry in motion. Len said he didn’t care for the dance because they broke hold too much and that they did not perform a Viennese Waltz but rather a theatrical hodgepodge. He went so far as to say that Mya was good but Dmitry let her down because he did not choreograph a true Viennese Waltz. When interviewed backstage Mya proved herself to be a classy woman. She said that she valued Len’s professional opinion and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that’s why she is there. They got 8’s from Bruno and Carrie Ann and a 5 from Len, leaving them with a score of 21 out of 30.
Kathy Ireland and Tony Dovoloni performed next, doing the Salsa, Tony wearing a scary flesh toned outfit. She seemed really small in the performance and slow. Len said she had the potential to develop but the performance lacked energy and was too careful. Bruno said that she could sell just about anything but not this Salsa. It lacked sex and looked as if she was treading on eggshells. Carrie Ann commented that she has great posture but needs to let go and loosen up. They scored 16 out of 30. Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo performed a Salsa next. She is an Olympic champion so right off the bat you have to consider her a contender for the title. Like I always say, Olympic gold medalists are not afraid of hard work, will do whatever they need to do to succeed, and are super competitive. I think there is a lot of potential in Natalie, and at times she was really good and performing to the audience. Carrie Ann called her a diamond in the rough, while Bruno said that she has everything it takes to be a great dancer. Len on the other hand must have taken his cranky pills tonight. He said he was bewildered, because there are all these gorgeous girls performing the very sexy Salsa and not one of them was able to knock his socks off. Carrie Ann said it was because he’s old. They got a score of 19 out of 30.
Macy Gray and Jonathan Roberts performed their Viennese Waltz next. Words cannot describe Macy Gray. Eccentric is a good word. And I think I know what she said when she got bleeped backstage but I’m not positive. If I’m right then I can tell why the judges laughed so hard they could barely give their scores. Carrie Ann said the performance was fascinating if the technique was lacking. Len said there was a vulnerability and charm about the performance, and if he was at home he would be voting for her. Bruno said she is going to touch people’s hearts but now needs to work on technique. They got a score of 15 out of 30.
Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough danced a Salsa next. Let’s just say I think the newly single Derek is flirting with this swimsuit model. Or at least he’s doing so for the cameras. Their dance was the best Salsa of the night. Len and Bruno were excited. Len said at last he got to see a hot, smoking Salsa while Bruno said it was what a Salsa should be. Carrie Ann said it was hot and made reference to the fact that Joanna could make it all the way to the finals. Bruno and Carrie Ann both complimented Derek on his excellent choreography. They got a score of 24 out of 30.
Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel performed the last individual dance of the night, a Viennese Waltz. I have one word to describe her performance – surprising. I never expected to see the elegant, graceful lady that performed on the show tonight. She brought tears to the eyes of her very famous parents who were sitting in the front row. Bruno said she was a vision of grace and elegance with impeccable style. Carrie Ann said the performance gave her chills, but she would have to dock her a point because she performed a lift. Bruno said it was the best Viennese Waltz of the night. They got a score of 23 out of 30.
Up next, the relay dances. The first one was the Foxtrot and featured Natalie, Joanna, Debi and Kathy and their partners. Again Natalie and Joanna were the class of the competition, but Debi and Kathy looked much more comfortable and at ease than they did in their first performance of the night. The results: first place Joanna and Derek; second place Natalie and Alec; third place Debi and Maks; fourth place Kathy and Tony. As the couples did last night first place got 10 points added to their score; 8 points for second place; 6 points for third place; 4 points for fourth place.
The second relay was the Cha Cha Cha and featured Melissa Joan, Kelly, Mya and Macy and their partners. Poor Macy – I think her stay on the show is going to be short. Here’s how the judges ranked the couples: first place for Mya and Dmitry; Kelly and Louis in second; Melissa Joan and Mark in third; Macy and Jonathan in fourth.
It’s going to be a tough call as to who goes home tomorrow. For the men, maybe Tom or Michael but I think that they might have a lot of fan support. As for the women I’m guessing maybe Macy or Kathy.
