DWTS: Season 9 semi finals

It’s the semi finals week on Dancing With The Stars, and each of the couples are to perform three dances including the knockout dance they’ve been practicing for weeks. A solo is also required in each of the Latin dances. Here’s my take on the performances, in the order they danced.

Donny and Kym. They performed a Tango for their first dance. Poor Donny. Kym had problems with her dress and I’m not sure if that was the issue or the fact that he was all in his head about doing well but the performance was lacking. Bruno said that while he was usually a master of disguising his problems tonight he completely lost it, and Carrie Ann said there was no drama on the dance floor. They got 21 out of 30 for this performance.

Joanna and Derek. Their first dance tonight was the Viennese Waltz. I thought she looked beautiful and the dance had a gorgeous flow. Bruno said that she had the grace of angels. Carrie Ann said it took her breath away. Len said that overall it was a most beautiful dance. They scored 27 out of 30 for this dance.

Kelly and Louis. The Rumba was their first dance tonight. I was kind of surprised by Kelly. While she isn’t the strongest dancer left in the competition she did a really great performance and I enjoyed watching it. Carrie Ann said that she has a magical quality that reaches right into her heart, and that she was moved to tears by the performance. Len said that it wasn’t her best dance, but not her worst either, and that she has turned into a very competent dancer. Bruno said she was very endearing, but the performance was lacking sexuality or sensuality. He didn’t use these words but you could tell that was what he was trying to say in his very Bruno-esque type of way. Their score was 24 out of 30.

Mya and Dmitry. Their first dance was the Waltz. It was nice but nothing special to me. I swear I saw a lift at the end of the performance but was it just me? Or is Carrie Ann growing soft in her old age and not docking the scores? Len said it was a joy to watch. Bruno called it love set to music. Carrie Ann said she loved it too, but felt Mya was lacking a bit in her connection in hold. They got 28 out of 30 for this first dance.

Donny and Kym. Their second dance of the night was the Samba. What a difference. Donny was back to his old self, giving some great showmanship. Bruno said a stumble doesn’t stop a professional and he loved it. Carrie Ann said it was better than his first performance, but a bit sloppy and she thought he was dancing small. Len said he came out strong and determined and he loved it. They scored 26 out of 30.

Joanna and Derek. Their next dance was the Cha Cha Cha. I liked it. I thought it was fun and her costume was great. Carrie Ann said she loved it. Len said it was clean, crisp and had great rhythm and was lovely to watch. Bruno said she should be proud of herself and what she has accomplished over the season. He also said something else about her and his bed but those visions are so disturbing I’m trying not to focus on them. They got 27 out of 30 for this performance.

Kelly and Louis. Their second dance of the night was the Quickstep. It was a very frantic and distracting dance for me. I’m not sure if it was her performance or my satellite reception that was kind of jerky. Len said it was totally beyond his expectations and she blows him away. Bruno compared her to Speedy Gonzales and said it was light and fast footed. Carrie Ann said even though she had one small stumble she nailed the routine. They scored 27 out of 30.

Mya and Dmitry. Their second dance was the Salsa. Again I found it a distracting performance, but I think this time it wasn’t her dancing but the rotating disco balls in the background. Bruno said that only one word could describe it – sensational. Carrie Ann said it was hot beyond belief and fantastic. Len said he was mesmerized by her buttocks. They scored a perfect 30 for the routine.

Donny and Kym. They selected the Jitterbug as their knockout dance. It was fun but short. I had forgotten that the knockout dances are much shorter than the regular dances. Carrie Ann said he needed this one to be good and it was. Len said it was well done and another winner. Bruno called it full of vigor. They scored 27 out of 30 for the dance.

Joanna and Derek. The Salsa was their knockout dance. I thought the dance was fun and pretty good, but again really short. Len called it hot, tasty and full of spice. Bruno said she was delicious and flirtatious. Carrie Ann loved it and thought it was excellent. They scored 27 out of 30 for this performance.

Kelly and Louis. They chose to perform the Cha Cha Cha for their knockout dance. The judges loved it, but I thought it was kind of boring. Bruno said it might have been a quickie but it worked for him. Carrie Ann said she did a great job. Len said at the beginning of the season he would have thought she would struggle with one dance, and tonight she performed three dances to a very high level. The judges gave them 27 out of 30.

Mya and Dmitry. They also chose the Cha Cha Cha for the knockout dance. Carrie Ann said that something was not speaking to her about the performance. Len said he was disappointed…disappointed because he wanted it to go on longer. Bruno said it was like an action packed trailer for a blockbuster movie. They got 29 out of 30.

I think that based on scores alone Donny is in trouble, but who knows. Any one of these couples could go home, and I think that at this point in the competition there is a lot of fan support for everyone. It will probably come down to the fans again, as it should.

I think whoever picks out the music for these dances should be fired. The music is awful; pure and simple. I couldn’t even get the beat in some of the songs, no wonder the pros seemed to look lost with the choreography. I am also getting sick of the “poor”Mya and Joanna – poor my foot. They both make money hand over fist, and win or lose they are assured of a pretty good future in show biz. Kelly, grow up. My vote went to Donnie, and that is the kiss of death. He’s been the steadiest and most entertaining of the whole motley bunch this season. I hope next season improves, or instead of clicking back and forth to the Big Bang Theory, I’ll just stick with it.
