DWTS: Semi Final Action
Tonight was the semi-finals on Dancing With the Stars, and the judges came out with all their claws showing. In the first dance, Brooke and Derek did quite a good jive considering that her footwork was not good and they finished after the music stopped. He wore some kind of modified zoot suit, and I was sure she was going to have a costume malfunction. The judges were loaded with criticism, and Carrie Ann said that the lift* was “blatantly disrespectful.” Come on – Lance and Lacy don’t know the meaning of “respect” and they get away with anything. Is there a double standard? Anyway, the scoring was the lowest Brooke got this year, 21. Now, when they did their second dance the Salsa, the worm turned. No one could have asked for more. It was one hot salsa! Score 28
Cody and Julianne started off with a paso doble. It was like watching a mummy dance. Cody is really trying, but the paso doble is too much dance for him. Personally, I think whoever picks the music should look for other work. Their salsa was pretty good, not in the same league as Brooke and Derek, but not bad. Cody really went all out. I think he’s come about as far as he’s going to go, and it’s too bad because he is a joy to watch.
At least the music was acceptable for Warren and Kym in the mambo. She did a lot of shimmying and so did he, and it was not his best dance. I thought she was going to lose the costume for a time there. The judges liked it. They also liked their jitterbug, but to me it looked like almost the same steps as the mambo. Lots of lifts, he is one strong guy, but I think he also hit his peak. ( Is it me, or does Carrie Ann really faun over the athletes? She really kisses up to Maurice and Warren. )
Much as it pains me to say this, and it does pain me. the best dancers of the night were Lance and Lacey, maybe he finally woke up. His mambo, while very audience friendly, lacked the latin movement – no hip action. His footwork was really good. Their second dance, the jitterbug, was 10 times better that Warren and Kym, even though Lance lost his shoe. I still think these two ignore traditional ballroom too much. However, based on tonight’s performances, they’re the ones to beat.
If I were a betting man, I would bet that Cody will be the one eliminated tomorrow. We’ll see.
*(Hey Carrie Ann – that ‘lift” was a standard move in the 40’s and 50’s type jive. Take a look at some of the old Movietone shorts.)

I also thought that Carrie Ann was much more critical and harsh to Brooke and the lifts. She made a comment how she was afraid Kym would fall in that last lift of their Jitterbug but not one word about how it was illegal. Carrie Ann is so catty when it comes to the female celebrites. Maybe she fancies herself one and sees them as competition. But she was just downright horrible to Brooke last night.

I was also pretty surprised about how harsh the judges were on Brooke last night. there’s a good post over at the official DWTS blog about the judging on the show: http://dancingstarsabc.livejournal.com/13416.html
