DWTS: The glow is leaving the glitter ball
As far as I can determine, the dancing this season on DWTS is nowhere near the caliber of dancing in previous shows. With few exceptions, Brooke, Cody and Warren, the others are just filling in air time. One of the things I would really like ABC to consider, is to use appropriate music for these dances. Week after week we are subjected to waltzes, rumbas and sambas danced to either hip hop, r & b or some tune a publisher wants pushed. Just for one, yes, only one performance I would like these dances done to the music that was originally written for them. Is that asking too much? Evidently so!
Now to the show – The Viennese Waltz danced by Maurice and Cheryl did absolutely nothing for either me or the waltz. One or two moves, no rise and fall, and ballroom is just not the style for Maurice. Even though Michael Flatley was nice to them, the judges did not score them too well (21). Now the Jive Lance and Lacey danced was done to appropriate music, Tootie Fruity, but Lance is a show dancer, Lacey had a marvelous jive. Very showy, and showed him off much better than some of his other dances. Even with some coaching from Cameron Matheson, Susan Lucci was awfully stiff in her mambo. Her footwork was excellent, and she is graceful, but her hips mostly stay there. Tony did a nice job on today’s episode of All My Children, though.
There is something about the way Brooke dances, even with a strain in her tendion, that completely mesmerizes you. It really fascinated Michael Flately(he gave them a 10). I think she and Derek did a wonderful rumba. Carrie Ann and Bruno didn’t though, sour grapes folks? Cloris and Corky really did an “old-fashioned” cha cha, or should I say cha? Cloris was Cloris, a crowd pleaser. God love Corky.
Let’s bring this revue to a conclusion by discussing two really good performances. Cody and Julianne, even with her ailment, in the samba, to once again puky music, did a really credible performance. He keeps getting better and better! Edyta will be filling in as his partner, while Julianne recuperates from surgery. Cody better be ready for real boot camp with Edyta! Warren and Kym did a rumba to dare I say BAD music, and did a credible job. The rumba is for a male who is considerably smaller that Warren, and he didn’t do an awful lot of dancing, but what he did was good. Kym is Kym and is great.
Group Routine_ It was better than I anticipated, but ATTENTION - HIP HOP IS NOT BALLROOM – IT IS STREET!!!! Here’s a good idea for the group dance – Make it like a real ballroom competition. Everyone does the fox trot or samba or waltz or paso doble. How original! And while you’re at it use the right kind of music.
Can’t wait to see Michael Flatley and Celtic Thunder tonight. The Ballroom Kids alone is worth sitting through the stupidity of rehash over rehash over rehash.
