DWTS: The Samba, The Foxtrot, and a wardrobe malfunction
I’m going to call this the week of really bad music choices on Dancing With The Stars. I don’t want to forget the wardrobe malfunction either. That was interesting too. More about that later.
The remaining 12 celebrities tonight would dance either the Foxtrot or the Samba. Here’s my take on tonight’s performances, in the order they happened.
Denise and Maks. They started off the night with the Samba. First of all, the music stunk. There was no party flavor to it, no fun. I know that the couples have little if any say in their music choices but this song just sucked. Second, I have no idea what I saw. I think I got so distracted by the poor music selection that it threw me off the whole dance. I’m no dance expert, and I don’t claim to be. But I have a major problem trying to see this performance as a Samba when there isn’t any Latin flavor to the music. Len told Denise that the performance needed a Latin kick. Well, hello producers, why don’t you give this woman a better song to work with?!?! Bruno and Carrie Ann thought the performance was not her best – Bruno went as far as to say she was going backwards. They ended up with 16 out of 30.
Chuck and Julianne. These two performed the Foxtrot tonight. Again with the music. I hated it. It really disturbed me. It just didn’t feel like a Foxtrot to me. I seem to be the only one who didn’t care for this dance, because the judges gave them some positive feedback tonight. Cranky old Len said that it was good but not great. Carrie Ann said that Chuck could be a contender. Bruno said he was finally in the driver’s seat, dancing with Julianne and not chasing after her. They got 23 out of 30.
Holly and Dmitry. I really want Holly to do well. She seems like a sweet and likeable person. Unfortunately dancing doesn’t seem to be her thing. OK, so for all the celebrities dancing is not their thing, but some are better at it than others. The music again – what the hell is going on tonight? Are you telling me that in the first 7 season of the show every Latin Samba song ever written has been used? Please, how can these celebrities get the Latin flavor of the dance when the song chosen is “Bellydancer.” The judges hated the performance. Carrie Ann said it was rough to watch and the lift police were out at it again tonight. Len said that Holly is like a match – hot at the top but wooden at the bottom, referencing her lack of footwork. Bruno called her breasts the “land of plenty” but also agreed that she had challenges with her footwork. They got a score of 17 out of 30.
Steve-O and Lacey. I was so happy Steve-O made it through to this week. Not because he’s my favorite celebrity but because it would have stunk for him to participate in the dance off last week. I don’t think he would have been able to do it. This week I felt bad for him again. He looked as if he was trying so hard in his Foxtrot. He said that he drew a blank and forgot part of the dance. Plus the poor guy tweaked his ankle and landed wrong on his back yet again at the end of the performance. Len and Bruno said that he started off well but it all fell apart. Carrie Ann said that she respected what he did this week, since it was obvious he was in pain yet pushing ahead. They got 15 out of 30.
Lawrence (LT) and Edyta. This was the first celebrity who actually looked as if he was having fun with the dance tonight. The music for this Samba was better but still not what I wanted to hear. The judges really liked the performance. Bruno said that for such a big guy he’s light on his feet. Carrie Ann said he did a good job. Cranky old Len said that LT needs more rhythm in the hips and less in the shoulders. They got a score of 20 out of 30.
Shawn and Mark. She is absolutely adorable and charming. I loved how she make Mark blush when she said to her friends “don’t I have the cutest dance partner.” They were great. Shawn has always been good but tonight was the first night I forgot that she was a gymnast and thought of her more as a dancer in her Foxtrot. Len and Bruno thought she had great movement and was very fluid in her movements; Carrie Ann said she looked like an elegant princess dancing on ice. They got 27 out of 30.
Gilles and Cheryl. I love the sexy naked neighbor from Sex and the City. He looks just as good clothed. I thought his Samba was on fire. OK, the bright outfit was a bit distracting but I loved the music (some true Latin flavor to it) and he can move his body that’s for sure. The judges loved it. Len said he made a hard dance look easy; Bruno said the Samba is a party dance and everyone would want to party with him; Carrie Ann said he brings out something in Cheryl she’s not seen before. They also got 27 out of 30.
David and Kym. I really like David, and like him even more after hearing something he said tonight. He said in the behind the scenes footage that he loves dancing with Kym and wanted the audience to see it in his Foxtrot tonight. Plus you could see how hard he works and how hard he tries. The judges loved it. Len thought it was the best dance he’s done; Bruno said it was a transformation; and Carrie Ann said she loved it. They got a score of 24 out of 30.
Steve and Karina. I feel really bad for Steve, as his time on the show is definitely taking a physical toll on him. He joked that when you mix dancing with a little Smirnoff you end up in an ambulance. Their Samba tonight was not technically good at all. I don’t think they deny the fact that Steve is not the strongest dancer among the celebrities. But I do think that the judges were cruel tonight in their comments towards the routine. Carrie Ann gave one of her back handed insults – you’re cute and adorable but the novelty does wear off. Len was rotten when he said that it was terrible from start to finish. Bruno was an a#% when he told Steve that it was the worst Samba he’s ever seen. Oh, you big bad judges. Winning friends and influencing people yet again……..NOT!!! They got 10 out of 30 for their score. Come on, was that really necessary??
Melissa and Tony. They got such a positive reaction from the crowd when they were announced. I think that a lot of people feel for Melissa and want to see her succeed after what happened to her on the Bachelor with that snake Jason. Yes, I’ll take every opportunity I can to remind whoever reads this that Jason is a snake. Their Foxtrot was lovely. Is that a tramp stamp being covered up on her back or is it a costume thing? But I digress. The judges loved her. Len and Bruno said it was great. Carrie Ann gave yet another back handed insult that she ended up qualifying saying “I’m not saying anything bad” but turns around and insults Steve Wozniak in the process. Good job Carrie Ann. The judges gave them a score of 27 out of 30.
Lil’Kim and Derek. I really like her. She’s surprised me with how much she wants to be a good ballroom dancer. Like I’ve said before I thought that perhaps I was judging her on the fact that she’s a hip hop/rap artist. That just doesn’t seem to go hand in hand with ballroom. Well, I was wrong. Her Samba was smoking hot. The judges loved it too. Len said she had a bionic booty. Bruno said it worked for him. Carrie Ann loved it too. They got 25 out of 30. And do you think that Derek was hugging her backstage because he was happy they did well or was it to cover up the fact that her nipple shield was hanging out on national television??? During the initial interview I thought that Samantha was trying to cover it up with the microphone but the camera operator or director never moved the shot. Didn’t Janet Jackson and CBS get in trouble for nipple exposure a few years ago? Hmmm……..
Ty and Chelsie. What can I say, this man is adorable. He is such a gentleman. He and Chelsie performed a Foxtrot and I think that clearly he is the most improved celebrity to date. Chelsie had a stumble in the program and Ty handled it like a pro. It didn’t throw him off at all. He had a bit of a mess up himself but he looked so good and was doing so well otherwise that it didn’t matter to me. The judges gave them 23 out of 30.
Since there is yet another dance off tomorrow night I’m looking forward to the results show. I’m sure it’s going to be somewhat faced paced again – at least I hope so. Hall and Oats will be performing tomorrow night. I think that the couples most in jeopardy are Steve and Karina, Steve-O and Lacey and Holly and Dmitry. Holly is going to get the votes from the boyfriends and husbands forced to watch the show. Steve is going to get the votes from us saps who love him and think he is so sweet (yes I did cast a few votes for him), plus I think it would give the judges a chance to apologize for their horrid behavior towards him tonight. If Simon Cowell can apologize on American Idol last week then these three yo-yos can do it too.

Two things – the music – where do they get these songs? They are so inappropriate for the dances. Time for a new music director, and when they get that – turn in those judges—Mean Mean Mean that’s what they are. Who was that Carrie anyway, a fly girl? Right up there in the ballroom scene wasn’t it.

I do agree with you, that is very poor music selection. Not Ballroom like. Herb
