DWTS - The Semi-Finals

Maybe it’s me, but does it seem to anyone else that the judges are pretty free with their scores this time?  The dancers are good, they would have to be to get this far, but in seasons past, 10s were not handed out so freely.  Are these dancers any better than say a Kelly Monaco or Drew Lachey or Emmett Smith?  I don’t think so - in some circles this would be called “grade inflation.”  Maybe the network big wigs are pushing for higher scores to get higher ratings.  Who knows?

In the ballroom segment Apolo and Julianne did a quick step that would have fit into a professional competition; it was right on.  All I can say is the standing ovation from the audience, and the perfect score from the judges was well deserved.  Ian has improved in his dancing technique, but if Cheryl were not his partner, he would have been long gone.  His tango was mediocre in my opinion.  Laila looked like Egyptian royalty in her gold gown, but her quick step was not up to par for her as she seemed uncomfortable with the dance.  Even though Joey got the perfect score from the judges, his fox trot was not spectacular.  The audience gave him a standing ovation, and he got a perfect score showing what a great entertainer he is.

Getting on to the Latin portion of the show, the only couple not scoring a perfect 30 was Apolo and Julianne, their cha cha was “too raunchy” for Len.  Len, take my advice and eat some prunes; it might help.  This was a real crowd pleaser, raunchy or not.  Deserving of high marks,  were Joey and Laila.  Laila is so much more comfortable dancing the latin style.  She does us gals proud the way she holds her own in that “all male” semi final.  Joey did the jive the way it should be done with flair and style and a whole lot of pizzaz!  Once again, Ian should thank his lucky stars he has Cheryl for a partner, if he could only stop being the 90210 California phoney, he might be a much better dancer.

I only hope the low judges score (although 29/30 can hardly be called low) doesn’t eliminate Apolo and Julianne, because my finalists are Apolo and Laila.  We’ll see tomorrow!

I did like how Laila handled the questions last night about her knees. It almost seemed like Samantha Harris was trying to make this huge issue out of it but she said she had the knee problems when she signed up for the show so she just deals with it. What a great answer, and I love that she didn’t complain about the pain (which you know had to be a killer in that quickstep routine).
