DWTS: Two dances, no waiting
This was the first week when the remaining celebrities on Dancing With The Stars had to learn two brand new, individual dances. Now is the time that is going to favor those celebrities that don’t have as much on their calendars or schedules as the ones who have a busy schedule. Of course now Cameron will probably have his workload lighten up significantly with the writers strike so I think he could truly be the dark horse of the competition right now.
Here’s my take on tonight’s competition.
Helio and Julianne. In the ballroom round they danced the Tango. Now I really don’t like the Tango to begin with, and I really dislike it when it is not performed to Latin music. I just did not get into the performance. The judges were not happy with the performance saying it was not technically as good as it should be. Len and Bruno gave them 8’s while Carrie Ann gave them a 9. In their Latin dance they performed the Samba and it was really fun to watch. Of course I got distracted with the dead birds on Julianne’s chest and is it me or did she overdo the self tanner this week? The judges thought it was really good and gave him 9’s across the board. At the end of the evening they finished with a total of 52 out of a possible 60.
Marie and Jonathan. Tonight Marie was back in full force. I thought her Quickstep was awesome. She had a nice character to the dance and also performed it very well. Len and Bruno gave her 9’s while Carrie Ann thought she was perfect, giving her a 10 for her performance. They did the Cha Cha Cha for their Latin dance, and I personally thought it was fun but I did think Marie pointed just a few too many times at Jonathan. While it was fun it was hard for me to believe that she was flirting with him or trying to get him to “come hither” as I think is part of the flavor of the dance. The judges thought she peaked in her first performance and gave her a 24 for the routine. She ended up the evening with a total of 52 out of 60 as well.
Mel B. and Maks. Here’s one of the celebrities who might start to feel the pinch on rehearsal time due to all her commitments with the Spice Girls. Their first dance was the Foxtrot and I didn’t really think it was outstanding. Good, yes. Outstanding, no. I did love her costume with the long flowing pants. The judges weren’t too pleased with the performance (good but not great…) and gave her a 24. Her Paso Doble, on the other hand, was perfection in the eyes of the judges. Her costume definitely had the wow factor going on. While the judges loved her performance, I did not. I’m not too sure why, I just know that I did not care for it. Was it the music, or the costume, or whatever I’m not too sure. It just did not do it for me. Like I said, the judges (read: experts) gave her a perfect score for her dance and she and Maks ended up with a score of 54 out of 60.
Jane and Tony. I think that Jane’s age might start to become a factor as she has to learn two new dances ever week. However, she always seems to pull it out at the end. Her first dance was the Quickstep, and it is just hard for me to see this dance performed to a Johnny Cash song. The judges thought she was graceful as always but commented on a lack of details and the fact that she has yet to come out and wow them. She got a score of 24 for the performance. Her Cha Cha Cha, to me, was boring. The judges liked it though, and that is important, although Len commented again about her need to come out and wow them over. They gave her a 26 for her second performance, leaving her with a total of 50 out of 60 for the night.
Jennie and Derek. Jennie is certainly improving. She gives a good performance, but she is not my favorite celebrity among the group. The judges love her though, and even with the harshest criticisms are always patting her on the back and pumping her up. The Viennese Waltz was strange to me. I did not really enjoy it and I can’t believe that I actually saw something that Len did – the Samba influenced steps in the routine. Len did not think there was enough Viennese Waltz in her Viennese Waltz. The judges gave her a 25 for this routine (Bruno gave her the 9). Her Rumba was much better in the eyes of the judges. Maybe it was because of her behind the scenes comments but watching that dance made me think of high school when you got asked to slow dance by someone you did not like “in that way” and he had the hots for you really bad but you wanted to be nice and still dance with him. Len and Carrie Ann gave her 9’s while Bruno gave her a 10. A side note: watching 90210 on SoapNet is one of my dirty little secrets. Seeing her close ups tonight made me think that she looks really old now. They got a total of 53 out of 60 for the night.
Cameron and Edyta. I do think the writers strike will help Cameron get some more practice time. Watching their Quickstep tonight made me realize that I have seen it all now. The song and artist for their routine – “Why Can’t I Be You” by The Cure. When you say Dancing With The Stars the first band that comes to mind is NOT The Cure. It did seem kind of a spastic number and the judges gave them a 24 for their performance. Cameron did much better with his Jive, and the judges commented that for a big (tall) guy he did a great job with the Jive. They gave him a 27 for this performance, leaving him with a 51 out of 60 for the night.
It’s hard to say who is going home tonight. Personally I think it’s time for Jane or Jennie to go but I don’t think that will happen. I think it’s going to be Marie and maybe Mel B. or Jane in the bottom two, with Marie voted off. As much as I like her, I think her time is fast approaching.
Tom Bergeron announced that there will be a new Dancing With The Stars tour in December 2007 and that Sabrina Bryan will be on the tour. There’s also only 3 weeks left of the show. I guess I should stop typing this blog entry and go vote while I still have time.

I think if the Tango were danced to the correct music by oh, say Alec and Edyta, you would really enjoy it. For that matter put Johathan and Anna in a formal gown and tails dancing to Strauss and the Viennese waltz would come alive.
