DWTS week 4: Paso Doble and Viennese Waltz and some great performances

Tonight the remaining nine couples were dancing either the Paso Doble or the Viennese Waltz.  Here’s my take on the show tonight, in the order in which they danced.

Kristi and Mark.  I had a feeling that Kristi was up first tonight, mainly because of the way she looked during introductions.  She was taking slow, deep breaths and had her hands on her hips.  She looked as if she was about to take the ice at the Olympics or something.  Kristi and Mark danced the Paso Doble and wow, it was so amazing.  I thought she looked gorgeous – the hair, the makeup and the costume were perfect.  The music was distracting but I just tried to ignore it and watch her amazing dancing.  Carrie Ann and Bruno loved it, giving her 10’s.  Cranky old Len gave her a 9, saying that he didn’t feel the drama from her but rather from Mark’s choreography.  They ended up with a score of 29 out of 30.

Priscilla and Louis.  I’m really kind of surprised by Priscilla in a few ways.  First that she is doing as well as she is for her age, and second how competitive she can be.  They danced the Viennese Waltz tonight and I thought it was a nice performance but nothing special.  Both Len and Carrie Ann noticed a lift that they did near the end of the performance and marked her down for it (they gave her 7’s to Bruno’s 8).  In the end she got a 22 out of 30.

Adam and Julianne.  Julianne said during her behind the scene interview that she wanted the judges to take Adam seriously as a dancer since he is trying hard and is improving every week.  Riding in on a unicycle for the start of your Paso Doble is not the way to do that.  The whole dance was kind of ridiculous to me.  Julianne looked great as always but Adam is certainly not in the top tier of dancers among the celebrities.  The judges were kind of baffled by his performance.  They ended up with a 19 out of 30.

Marlee and Fabian.  This week they danced the Viennese Waltz.  Every week I am amazed at how well Marlee does in the dancing and interpreting the music and character of the dance.  This week was no exception.  Second week in a row with a Billy Joel song, but “She’s Always a Woman” is such a beautiful song and she and Fabian did such a beautiful performance.  She actually made Carrie Ann cry.  Carrie Ann said that the performance took her breath away and it truly touched her.  All three judges, however, commented on the fact that she needs to work on her posture.  They got a score of 24 out of 30 this week.

Mario and Karina.  They danced a Paso Doble to a Red Hot Chili Peppers song.  Who picks these songs?  I thought the performance was good, much better than his Tango last week, but nothing truly special to me.  Of course tonight I’m comparing every other Paso to the one danced by Kristi and this one just didn’t measure up.  Len was tough on him again this week with his comments, and when Samantha asked Mario how he felt about it he was a gentleman.  He said that his comments brought him back to earth last week, and that the comments will help him to work even harder and get better every week.  The scores were all over the board – a 7 from Len, an 8 from Carrie Ann and a 9 from Bruno, for a total of 24 out of 30 tonight.

Jason and Edyta.  Watching their Viennese Waltz made me feel kind of dirty.  It was so sexy that at first I thought it would be better suited for a Rumba.  The judges loved it though, so much that Bruno and Carrie Ann forgave one of Jason’s mis-steps enough to give him 10’s.  Len wasn’t so forgiving, and gave him a 9.  They tied Kristi’s score of 29 out of 30.

Cristian and Cheryl.  I’m liking Cristian, and I like him even better when he dances without a shirt (LOL).  Their Paso Doble was really great.  It was to Spanish music (which I loved) and he really captured the flavor and character of the matador.  Bruno and Carrie Ann thought it was convincing and gave him 9’s while Len thought the music conquered him and it should have been the other way around so he gave them an 8.  Their total for tonight was 26 out of 30.

Shannon and Derek.  I didn’t know that Derek had gotten hurt last week in rehearsals for the results show.  He snapped something in his neck and ended up in a neck brace with the doctors saying to “stay off it” for a week or so.  So Jonathan Roberts, official substitute dance partner and teacher for ill professionals stepped in to help Shannon learn the Viennese Waltz.  The judges loved her performance, and I wish I could have commented on it because all I did during the dance was watch Derek to see if he hurt himself again.  Len said it was the best dance he saw tonight and gave it a 10, the other two judges gave her 9’s for a total of 28 out of 30.

Marissa and Tony.  This week we saw a whole different Marissa.  She came out and totally attacked the Paso Doble tonight.  I bet she used the judges as her motivation for the anger of the dance.  The judges loved her, saying this was the Marissa they knew was in her and the one they were waiting to see.  She got a score of 24 out of 30, her best score so far this season.  I thought perhaps she could have gotten one or two 9’s but no such luck.

Tomorrow night the guest performer is Sheryl Crow and the “dreaded” bottom two will be revealed.  But we heard that before and got tricked last week into not finding out who was in the bottom two.  Adam has to be in danger, unless his fans really pull for him this week.
