First live show for Grease: You’re the one that I want

So what can I say about the first live show for Grease: You’re the one that I want?  It was long – probably too long.  Did the producers of the show invite Olivia Newton-John on just for her name recognition?  She didn’t have anything to say about any of the contestants other than “very nice”, “great voice”, “would make a good Danny”, etc.  Some of the contestants could have used a little constructive criticism (like Matt and Ashley A. – they weren’t bad by any means, just could have used some expert advice) but she was all nice and sweet to everyone.  Did we need the Q&A segment with the Sandy contestants?  Plus the group numbers – right now we don’t know the individual abilities of these contestants.  Maybe we should get to know them first and then see them perform with each other.  There are so many contestants still in the hunt.  Once the field gets narrowed down it would be more meaningful because then you would see the men and women interact with each other.

The people who have an actual financial and professional stake in the show (David Ian, Jim Jacobs and Kathleen Marshall) did have some constructive criticism for some of the candidates.  Even though they really don’t have a say in who gets the roles of Danny and Sandy in their production of Grease it is so obvious that they are trying to sway the voters with their comments.  Some of the things that come to mind are when they tell Jason that he needs more depth and is more pop than 1950’s or when Jim Jacobs tells Kate that she gives him goose bumps when she performed tonight.

There was a small surprise tonight, when they announced that the final 12 was actually the final 14 – David Ian decided to bring back the Danny and Sandy contestants that were last to be cut before the live shows.  Since we didn’t get a peek at the other finalists when this announcement was made I don’t think it was much of a surprise to them.  Wouldn’t you just have loved to see a shocked, OH S@^&*%$@ look on one of their faces!  Would have made it much more interesting for sure.

I’ve also noticed that many of the contestants resemble other people, either on reality TV or stars.  For example:

  • Derek looks like John Stamos
  • Kevin looks like Marcel from Top Chef
  • Chad reminds me of Donny Osmond
  • Ashley S. looks like Meg Ryan

Did anyone else but me notice Jason and that eyebrow thing he did during his entire performance?  He kept raising his one eyebrow.  Maybe he thought it was sexy or something.

My favorites (right now) among the guys are Kevin, Max, Austin and Matt (even though he was probably the weakest male performer tonight).  Among the women I liked Kate, Ashley S. and Laura.  Julana was my husband’s favorite female performer.  I think the people in jeopardy of being voted off are Ashley A., Jason or Matt.
