Five couples left on DWTS

There’s only two more weeks of competition left after tonight on Dancing With The Stars season 5 so I was excited to watch the performances this week.  The celebrities really needed to step up their routines tonight if they wanted to get at least the judges scores on their sides.  Here’s my take on tonight’s show:

Jennie and Derek.  The first dance they performed was the Jive.  I was so completely distracted by her costume that it wasn’t even funny.  Green sequins everywhere, including her wrists.  At the end of her performance Tom Bergeron joked that he was craving frozen vegetables.  The judges were not impressed with the routine, saying that it was not a Jive deserving of the semi finals (next week).  They gave her a score of 24 for this dance.  Their second dance was the Foxtrot and the judges thought she came back pretty well after some harsh criticisms of her first performance.  They gave her a 26 for the performance.  They ended up with a total of 50 out of 50 for the night, which put them in fourth place.

Cameron and Edyta.  Their first routine was the Viennese Waltz and let me say it was really nice to hear some waltz like music for a waltz.  Cameron rocked the performance and the judges liked it too, giving him a 27 for the dance.  The second routine of the night for them was the Cha Cha Cha.  I was distracted by the flesh tones of Cameron’s costume plus the low riders Edtya wore for the performance.  If they were any lower they would have been around her knees.  I kept waiting for that wardrobe malfunction that seemed ready to happen.  The judges were not as pleased with this dance of his, saying he was kind of wooden and stiff.  He got a 24 for this performance, leaving them with a total of 51 out of 60 for the evening and smack in the middle of the leaderboard.

Marie and Jonathan.  Marie came back so well after what had to be a terribly difficult week.  The judges criticized both of her dances by saying they lacked content for this point in the competition.  They did a Rumba which kind of made me laugh.  Marie and Jonathan hooking up?  It was pretty funny when she said she had to get permission from his wife Anna before getting all sexy in the dance.  The judges thought she captured the spirit of the dance but that it had little content.  They gave them a 24 for this performance.  Her second dance was the Jive and they performed to the Shania Twain song “Whose bed have your boots been under?”  Again, Marie Osmond.  Again I had to laugh.  But I really enjoyed the routine, it seemed as if she and Jonathan were having a blast.  The same criticisms came from the judges – not enough content for this point in the competition.  She got a 25 for this routine, leaving her with a total of 49 out of 60 for the night.  She and Jonathan are in last place in terms of judges’ scores.

Helio and Julianne.  Hello, did Helio come back this week or what!  Julianne brought in a team of ballroom experts to help Helio (one of whom just happened to be the recently eliminated Tony Dovolani – what is that all about?) with the dances this week. It was time well spent.  Their Paso Doble (to Spanish music, thank you very much) was amazing and got a score of 27.  Their Quickstep was even better, getting the only perfect score of the evening.  They ended up the evening in first place with a total score of 57 out of 60.

Mel B. and Maks.  Now I really don’t like the Tango so I don’t know if it is fair for me to criticize the dance.  I will, however, criticize the music.  “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode?  Who the heck picked that one out?  The judges liked the intensity of their performance, giving them a 27.  Their second dance was the Mambo and you could tell that they were having fun with it – so much so that both Mel and Maks grabbed Tom Bergeron’s ass on the way backstage.  Poor Tom – he said that he felt like a piece of meat.  The judges liked the performance but they did not get the perfect score they needed to tie for first place – they only got a 29.  They finished up the night in second place with a total score of 56 out of 60.

Tomorrow night Gloria Estefan will be performing on the show and Bergeron said that Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas (the “lovebirds” as he called them) will be on the show next week with a “sneak peak” of something.  Lord knows what that could mean on DWTS.

I think that Marie and Jennie are in trouble, just because of their scores.  But I have been wrong before so I’m not going to make any guesses about who should go home tomorrow night.

I think Jenny’s costume had that young sister of the Jolly Green Giant look.
