Gabe is also kicked off Hell’s Kitchen tonight
Part 2 of tonight’s two hour premier of Hell’s Kitchen had the teams competing against each other in cutting perfect 10 ounce steaks. No one seemed to really do a good job outside of Tom (he had five steaks count), but the men lost the challenge. Their punishment – having to cut all the steaks for the next dinner service. The women won a dinner with Chef Gordon Ramsey, who seemed to show a softer side, and this wasn’t the only time tonight we saw a kindler, dare we say gentler, Chef Ramsey.
During the dinner service Heather got a very bad burn to her hand. While she was crying with her hand in a bowl of ice she was delegating her responsibilities to her other teammates – a fact which did not go unnoticed by Ramsey. Later he remarked on how impressive he found that to be. But her injury did force her to go to the hospital.
Larry also ended up in the hospital during this episode, but it was due to stress. He had to take himself out of the competition, and to be honest I don’t think he would have lasted much longer if he stayed. He did really poorly in the steak cutting challenge and this had his teammates thinking they couldn’t count on him.
Once again, at the end of the evening Chef Ramsey stated there really was no winning team, just a team that did less poorly than the other one. The women won this round. He appointed Garrett as the best of the worst and had him nominate two teammates for elimination. He picked Giacomo and Tom.
Tom gives Chef Ramsey an impassioned speech, promising that the lack of communication seen in the kitchen tonight would not happen again. Ramsey accepts this explanation and tells him he’s safe. He then calls Gabe out to defend himself, but Gabe doesn’t do a good job. Ramsey sends him home, saying that while he is a sweet guy sweet guys don’t make good cooks. He ends the show by saying that being a chef is about having passion, something Gabe did not have.
It’s still to early to tell who is going to do well and who will not. Heather does seem to be standing out from the rest of the contestants as someone who is tough and a leader. Ramsey did give her a compliment this evening, and compliments don’t seem to come all that often from him. But this is a competition where alliances, strategy and planning seem to be key roles in success. We’ll have to see what happens next week.

This was the first night I ever watched Hell’s kitchen. Was it me or does Chef Ramsey remind you of Simon from American Idol?

When I saw the almost ended repeated show of Hell’s Kitchen in this episode, suddenly my thoughts went “Omigod! Is that Gabe? The Gabe that I knew few years back, working as an expat here in Malaysia?!”
Then - WHAM! - he’s gone! Got kicked out by Chef Ramsey… oh well… it’s a saucy short story to tell my colleagues then.
