Gail is eliminated on Shear Genius
So far on this season of Shear Genius I haven’t been wowed by anyone. That changed this week as I was really wowed by one of the styles in the elimination challenge.
Nicole wakes up early to find a bowl of flip flop sandals on the counter and all the pairs have a number on them. She sais that she’s going to pick the one she wants before telling everyone else about the clue. She picks number three and then goes and tells everyone about the clue.
The stylists meet up with Jaclyn and guest judge Oscar Blandi on the beach. He’s a celebrity stylist who has worked on people like Katie Homes, Jennifer Garner and Salma Hayek. Jaclyn tells the stylists that this shortcut challenge will test their cutting and styling skills as they transform a look from a day at the beach to one that is suitable for going out. They will have to cut and style the clients’ hair without washing it. Their clients turned out to be a bunch of surfers in need of new hairstyles. All they will have to use are shears, battery powered clippers and a spray bottle of water. Nicole and Dee turn out on top of the challenge, and Nicole wins it. She is told that she’ll have an advantage during the elimination challenge. Glenn and Daniel are the bottom two, with Glenn being named last among the group. Nicole thought it was funny, since she overheard Glenn and Daniel talking about her saying that they thought she should go home because she is so inexperienced.
The next day the stylists are back in the salon to find out about their elimination challenge. They will need to give a new look to a client who really needs their help, cutting and coloring as needed. They will be judged on how well they transform the clients’ look. A group of women come in, all ages, and when Rene tells them they all take off their wigs. It turns out that all of these women are suffering from an autoimmune disease known as Alopecia, a condition that causes a person’s hair to fall out. The stylists will be working with a wig for their client to give them a new look. The wigs are of a very high quality and most of these women wouldn’t have access to them otherwise. Paulo gets very emotional as he learns of the challenge, saying that this is a powerful gift they’ll be able to give the women. As winner of the shortcut challenge Nicole gets to pick the order in which the stylists will pick clients. She picks first, then the rest go in this order: Paulo (because she said he’s been stuck with the last pick so many other times), Nekisa, Charlie, Gail, Daniel, Dee and Glenn. Glenn has immunity so it really doesn’t matter when she picks.
At the hair show the judges really liked Paulo’s work. Jaclyn said it reminded her of Farrah Fawcett. This was the style that really impressed me. He gave a young woman a really sexy, fun and modern hairstyle. The judges also liked Nicole, but based on how they spoke to her at first you would never have known it. Kim Vo tells her that she took a risk, and was she afraid to go as short as she did and was she afraid this might cause her to lose the competition. She said she realized it was a risk but that her client liked her (Nicole’s) hair and wanted a similar cut. When the stylists weren’t there they said that what Nicole did took guts, but it paid off and the client absolutely loved her new look. Paulo was named the winner, but in true Paulo style he does, as Charlie says, get the short end of the stick since there is no more immunity.
The bottom three were Nekisa, Charlie and Gail. The judges thought that Nekisa’s style was too retro 80’s and that her client didn’t like it. Gail was holding back in her work – the style was too boxy and the color wrong. They thought that Charlie was playing it safe. His style was not young or modern and you could tell it was a wig a mile away.
In the end the judges came down to Gail or Charlie. The judges said that Gail’s look was artificial and aged the client. I guess having a safe style as Charlie did was better than a blah style like Gail and in the end it was Gail who was eliminated.
