Gene Simmons Family Jewels episode 3: Gene at the New Hyde Park Fire Department
The second new episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels tonight had Gene opening the show with a quote – with great power comes great responsibility. He also states that by the fact that he is a “rock god” he is a role model, whether he wants to be one or not. Gene also says that it is his responsibility (and the responsibility of anyone who is a celebrity) to give back to the community.
Gene is in New York City for business, and he calls his mother (who lives on Long Island) to see if they can meet for dinner. He says that he is going to send out a car to pick her up. Mom, in her very guilt ridden way, tells Gene that he should come out to her house to see her instead. Gene says that no one can do guilt like his mother, so he gives in and tells the driver to take him to Long Island to his mother’s house. He takes her to dinner, and he says that they could go at a real dinner time to eat, that it didn’t have to be 4:00. She said that there is a sale now, and you can get it cheaper if you go now. When the dinner comes she pulls out her own sandwich out of her purse. Classic. While they are at dinner Doc calls. Gene takes the call, but Mom tells him that they are so seldom together that he shouldn’t take the call. Gene again gives in and hangs up. Later on he goes to the men’s room and calls Doc, who tells him that he needs to be in the city later that night for a dinner meeting.
While at dinner Gene’s mom tells him that she has a friend who has a son who is a volunteer fire fighter who wants to meet him the next day at the firehouse. Gene said that he came to New York to work but she said that she promised so…..Gene tells her he will see what he can do.
They go back to mom’s house when Gene feigns tiredness. She goes upstairs and Gene tries to sneak out the front door. She hears him and says she is going to come downstairs to tuck him in and kiss him goodnight. Gene gets dressed in his footie pajamas and lets her do that. Once she is gone he gets a call from Doc who is in front of the house in a limo. Gene sneaks out in the pj’s and climbs into the limo, to find out that there are several pretty young girls in there along with Doc. Gene has clothes on under the pj’s and gets ready to go to dinner to meet with an investor. Gene says he brings the pretty girls to these kind of dinner meetings to disarm the business men. At 4:05 am Gene gets back to his mother’s house and sneaks in.
Early the next morning Gene’s mom wakes him up and says they have to go to the firehouse early. It’s the New Hyde Park Fire Department and Gene quickly finds out that his mother volunteered him to take part in the first annual Gene Simmons Fire Safety Day. Gene is a good sport and says that he doesn’t know anything about fire safety but does what he can to help. During the question and answer session a young Boy Scout says “Mr. Simmons can you spit fire for us?” The fire chief says it’s ok and that no one should do what Mr. Simmons is about to do, but Gene does go ahead and spit fire for the crowd who goes crazy. After this Gene gives an interview to a local media person, saying that people need to know that these firefighters are volunteers and what they do for the community. The media person says something like I’ll guess you find out since you’re training with the fire department all day. Gene puts on a helmet with Prob on it and does try to learn what he can. He tells one of the firefighters that he needs to be in the city in a few hours but it doesn’t seem to work out. He trains on different aspects of firefighting. At the end of t he day the chief offers him the helmet as a souvenir. Gene says that he doesn’t deserve it and that people need to know how hard it is to be a firefighter. In fact, he was lightheaded himself from the exertion. They tell him to go and take a nap while dinner is being prepared. While Gene is sleeping the tones go off and he sleeps through it. The man must sleep like a log. If you’ve ever been in a firehouse when the tones go off it is really hard to not hear them.
Gene wakes up from his nap and says he needs to call a car service so he can get into the city. The firefighters offer to take him, saying that no car service is going to get him there faster than they can. Even though he is running late Gene makes it to the Billboard convention just in time to give his speech.
You gotta love a guy who supports volunteer firefighters. Yet again Gene Simmons surprises me, and in a good way. I wonder if he’ll come out to our local firehouse and help us get some publicity.
