For what it's worth, when my younger daughter got married last week, and we discussed the legality of name changes, I did some research into the matter. It turns out that in most US states (LA, with a legal system based on France's being the exception) with common law traditions that trace back to Anglo-Saxon law, one can simply begin openly using a name, and that is just as legal as a name change officially sanctioned by a judge. It may be difficult to persuade some institutions to recognize that change without the court proceeding, but by law, if she tells people her name is Tweed-Simmons, it is.

Who cares if he marries Shannon. He's as good as married to her anyway. For legal reasons it would probably be beneficial for both of them if they were married. They've been living together for so many years already that if they split up, it would cost him as much as a divorce. Besides it would make Shannon happy.
